I was so excited when my package finally arrived in the mail! I tore open the yellow envelope, made sure my toddler was amused with her toys and immediately sat down and started to read! (Thank God I had completed my chores for the day!)
Written under the pen name 'Kathryn Harvey' Butterfly is one of those novels where you have to clear your schedule well in advance to read. There is a lot going on within it's pages and it needs your full attention. (I will sign a note saying I have given you permission to ignore the housework if anyone complains... I've got your back!) I was torn the other night between watching 'Love In The Wild' and reading Butterfly. Not wanting to miss out on either, I compromised and read during commercial breaks. It took all my spare time, made me late for bed, forced my husband to complain about my sleep habits, but it was well worth it!

Trying to write a blog review on this novel is a difficult task. The reason? Because if I say too much I may spoil the mystery of the plot. I don't want to do that to the reader. So I will keep with the spirit of Butterfly and the characters by revealing only tidbits I feel can be shared.........

Let's start with the description from Amazon:

"An arousing, passionate story of three women's hidden desires and the place called Butterfly, where dreams are kept and where fantasies come to life.
Above an exclusive men's store on Rodeo Drive there is a private club called Butterfly, where women are free to act out their secret erotic fantasies. Only the most beautiful and powerful women in Beverly Hills are invited to join: Jessica, a lawyer who longs for the days when men were men, and women dressed to please them; Trudie, a builder who wants a man who will challenge her - all of her - with no holds barred; and Linda, a surgeon, who uses masks to unmask the desires she hides even from herself.  My take:

"Butterfly" flits back and forth between it's characters weaving a spell over the reader. It spans over several decades to tell the complex tale of the mysterious owner of Butterfly, and how the club came to be.
We follow several different characters, some of them over time, others in just their present day situations.
The subjects of sexism, racism, homosexuality, sex, ethics, politics and religion are themes that appear throughout the story. In my personal opinion, the author did a fantastic job capturing the attitudes and struggles society faced in the mid nineteen-hundred's. (I'm still waiting on Marty McFly to show up with the Delorian so I can go back and check things out for myself) The terminology and slang smoothly transitioned between the decades which set an authentic tone to the novel. 'Kathryn Harvey' captured the thoughts and challenges of the poorer classes in the fifties, especially those pertaining to women with no education and the harsh attitudes of men who believed women had a place and it was either the bed or the kitchen. We hear the thoughts of a poor ignorant white man, and how he feels about the African American help. We read about J.F.K assassinated in his prime and how it effected and changed not only people in the country but the course of characters lives in the book. We see the freedom and sexual liberation of woman in the sixties. (You get the picture) I could keep going all the way until the book takes you to the 'present day' of Butterfly which is the nineteen-eighties.
I especially enjoyed as the story progressed to describe the Hippie Movement in the late sixties. One line made me chuckle and I will share it as it is not in any way crucial to the plot: The following is in response to an inquiry of a secretaries whereabouts:

 "I don't know. She just came in this morning, announced that she was no longer Debbie Schwartz but Daffodil, and that she was going to go out and find her karma"

(Oh the things that amuse me)


I found myself nostalgic as I read about the days when things were still kept in filing cabinets. When we used typewriters and people had to actually 'wait' for their phone calls. (And YES, I am old enough to have used both a typewriter and a rotary phone, but if anyone asks I am twenty five!)



 I don't think I would even classify this novel as 'Mommy Porn'. There is a depth to this novel that puts it in a class of it's own.While Butterfly does have imaginative and erotically charged sexual encounters, there is a rock solid story line full of intensity and drama. We don't see 'as much' sex as we saw in the other novels I have reviewed and what we do see in Butterfly is written with class, not crass. (Newsflash for those who think this is a straight up tale about erotic sex. It's NOT!)  May I be so bold to say that if you didn't find Fifty Shades Of Grey to be your cup of tea, than Butterfly may be more suited to your tastes! (And if Fifty Shades was your style, it doesn't matter read this book anyway!)


Let's take a quick peek at the characters!

Dr. Linda Markus: A surgeon with two failed marriages, and some serious sexual issues. When she’s not trying to work herself to death, she is at Butterfly using it as her own personal ‘sex therapy' session. Will she ever be able to fix her problem? Or is she doomed to be alone forever.

 

Trudie Stein: Fun-loving, single and looking for love in all the wrong places. She’s the most sought after female builder in a business. A business that is dominated by men who see her as more of a pain in the ass than anything. She has a veracious sexual appetite and just needs to meet Mr. Right… Butterfly helps her get her jollies off in a safe and fun environment while she figures out what exactly she needs in a man.

Jessica Franklin: A young, successful and shrewd Entertainment Lawyer by day and a suppressed, emotionally abused, submissive wife by night (or whenever her douchebag husband is around) Her friend Trudie introduces to her the idea of Butterfly and wants her to join. Will it help her heal from her husband’s domineering ways? Will cheating solve her problems and give her the confidence she needs?

Rachel Dwyer: A lost, lonely and embarrassingly naive little girl who gets caught up in a world of prostitution. She's an avid reader for someone in her age and social class. She loves to get lost in a book and will do anything improve her life. For someone who didn't grow up with a lot of love, she has a lot to give.

Danny MacKay: A despicable low life, hell bent on being the most powerful man he can be. His ego and skill at cunning knows no bounds!

Beverly Highland: The best and only word to describe her is..... 'Enigma'

Kathryn Harvey is a pseudonym for best selling author Barbara Wood. This book was originally released in 1988 and has been re-released by Turner Publishing! Butterfly is the first in a trilogy, followed by 'Stars' and Private Entrance. I have added both to my reading list, along with every title Barbara Wood has ever written. She is an extremely talented author, and I look forward to discovering more of her work. (She has a LONG list of books I need to catch up on!)

In my personal opinion, Butterfly can be enjoyed by both women AND men. In fact, I challenge my male audience to read this as I would like to hear a man's take on it! (If you are a kick-ass guy and will read the book, send me an email and let me know your opinion so I can share with everyone!)

 I will reiterate again that the book is one hell of a story and there is more to it than a 'fantastical' bordello and what goes on inside it's walls.

The many characters, story lines and flashbacks, twists and events taking place, that it makes a truly captivating read.

I can assure you this is not the last you will hear from me about this trilogy or author (pen name or not!)..........

Unauthorized Access by Andrew McAllister is a novel that needs to be catapulted into the "Bookish Big Leagues" (aka Best Sellers lists) Another debut author who has delivered and I will be reading this novel again!


Honestly, I am so excited about this novel I don't even know where to begin!

When I read that excerpt, I was immediately hooked. It sounded like it had page turner potential. I was not disappointed!

Why was that? Well read on....

From page one I was impressed with Mr. McAllister's writing style. It was descriptive, witty and overall had a great flow. The character dialogue was natural, and you almost felt immersed IN the story, rather than just reading it. This book would make an amazing movie! (Listen up Hollywood!)
It's a book that while entertains, certainly makes you think! In this day in age with terrorism, cyber-theft, and relying on technology are YOU prepared should your bank suddenly be sent into a panic? This book may have you hollowing out a teddy bear for stashing emergency funds. (Sorry Ted!)


 The story is told with all key players points of view. Watching their stories unfold from the start always adds that extra thrill. It helped build the novel into an amazing climax with a fantastic ending!

The lead character Rob Donovan is one of the most 'down to earth' characters I have ever read as a lead in a suspense or thriller. He doesn't have the skills of a cop, FBI agent or that of which you typically see in the role of a hero. (I could probably handle a gun better than this guy)  The struggle he endures throughout the book is close to home as what any human being put in that position would go through. It's a very realistic portrayal, and it's enough to put knots in your stomach.
Can you imagine being accused of a crime and not one single person believes you, including those you love?
*shudder*
How do you think you or your loved ones would react in a situation where you are cleverly framed?

Lesley McGrath is not only Rob's fiancée, but her uncle is Rob's boss (The Bank CEO), and she is a news reporter for a local television station. (Oh what a tangled web we weave...) Her situation is tremendously complicated. How do you cope when you may not know your partner as well as you think? How do you maintain your professionalism and bias at your job, when two people you love are involved in the biggest story making headlines?

Tim Whitlock is Rob's best friend and coworker. Scheming, mislead and delusional are all appropriate descriptions for his character. Passive Aggressive to the core, he is by far one of the more complex and interesting characters in the story. His emotions and involvement in events are twisted. Not the kind of friend you want at all.You'll end up loving to hate him.

Stan Dysart is Lesley's uncle and President and CEO of the First Malden Bank. He's a shrewd businessman who loves his family, and his business and will do what it takes to ensure his bank and customers (even niece) are taken care of. He was one of my favorite characters...both lovable and sly. Following his particular storyline made the story that much better.

One word to describe the relationships and portrayal in the novel: Real.

 I can be picky about the conclusion of my novels, that is why I am extremely pleased with how this book ended. I won't spoil it for you at all. You have to read it and see why I am thrilled! The only teaser you get is after the amazing climactic scenes, the ending was brilliant! Perfect! The Epilogue was my favorite, right down to the final sentence. Unlike most books I have read, I couldn't exactly 'see' where this was going, and I like it that way.The author keeps the reader on his/her toes.

One word to describe the conclusion: Satisfying

It's not a book that you can easily put down (Yes... I am enthusiastic, deal with it)  I have several people in mind who I know will enjoy suspense and thrillers (**cough** DAD **cough**) and I am going to make sure they pick one up! Hot In Handcuffs

Not too long ago my 8 year old daughter came running to me all excited shrieking ‘Mommy, these are so cool! Can I keep them?’

You can imagine the look of shock and horror on my face when I saw the item she was holding. It was a gag gift I'd received about 11 years ago from a friend. (YES it was a gag gift!!) A pair of fuzzy purple handcuffs that had long been forgotten in a bedroom drawer. (Oh 'Shut Up' all of you who don't believe me! I don't even know where the keys are!)

‘No Naomi, you may not keep them.... and you really shouldn’t be in the drawers in my room, they are private’ I responded.

“But my friends and I could use them for playing!!” She whined. I shook my head NO and tried to control the irresistible urge to laugh. I told her to go put them back where she found them.
 (I felt like I was on a hidden camera show) 

I thought she was about to leave to do as I asked when a light bulb went off in her head.

‘Mommy, why do you have handcuffs anyway?’
 (Well, sometimes when two people love each other they play good cop, bad cop... )

Thinking fast on my feet I responded “Well, you know how we always say if anyone ever broke into the house, that mommy would kick their butts right? Well, I need the handcuffs to help until the police arrive”
(My story and I'm sticking to it!)

“Mommy, but why are they fuzzy and purple?”
 (Are you still here? Don't you have a dance to make up? Some Wii games to play? Coloring to do? Put the cuffs back and forget they exist child!!!)

I replied “Well, that’s because I am a girl, and I think they are much prettier than boring old silver handcuffs”
(True Story)

Satisfied with that answer, she passed them to me, and took off.
(She bought it! Phew!)

A few points I need to make before moving on:
A) Gag gift or not, hide your 'toys' where the kids wont snoop.
B)  I need to find the keys.... *wink*wink*nudge*nudge*
C) If Paul Walker or Ryan Reynolds break into my house anytime soon, I'm prepared!

Stop laughing about my cuffs.... let's move on to a book with Handcuffs in the title!

If you are a "Mommy Porn" aficionado (or fancy to be one) you have probably heard of "Hot In Handcuffs". The book is a collection of three short stories by Shayla Black, Sylvia Day and Shiloh Walker.

I was in the mood for a lighter read to help me mellow out and relax. "Hot In Handcuffs" sounded like what the doctor ordered! (I swear the doctors scribble on the prescription said 'read porn'....either that or 'take penicillin'... potato..po-tat-o...whatever)

The rundown:

The first story "Arresting Desire" by Shayla Black involves characters named Jon Bocelli and Lucia DiStefano. He's a studly FBI agent, she's a young 25 year old virgin. Two years after they've last seen each other, he discovers she is still a virgin, but not for long if she can help it. Jon finds out Lucia is heading off to an erotic resort to 'give it up' to a random stranger, and he snaps. The two set out to solve the mystery regarding his brother and her father all the while giving into their lust once and for all! This novella is certainly a sexual fantasy if there ever was.
Short Story + Steamy Sex = Meeee-ow. 

 Sylvia Day is the author of the second novella "On Fire" (Yes, yes it is!) The title says it all. Ms. Day had a bit more 'meat' (for lack of a better term) to the story than the previous. She tells the tale of Fire Inspector Darcy Michaels, who ends up in a whirlwind relationship with the sexy Deputy U.S. Marshal sent to help solve the arson case plaguing her town. Jared Cameron is unlike the men she typical gets involved with. What should be a one night stand, becomes a blazing hot, passion-filled relationship. Talk about sparks! I love how the two decide to hook up. (You'll have to read the story to find out how it happened!)
The novella is a hot sex fest, with a decent story line. I enjoyed it from start to finish!

Last but not least "The Unwilling" by Shiloh Walker surprised me. It wasn't as sexual as the first two. (Which isn't too bad, as by the second story you probably need a cold shower, fresh batteries and need to let your lover rest!) The story is about two psychics and former lovers. A Lieutenant named Mica Greer and former FBI agent named Colby Mathis.The two are reunited 15 years later to hunt for a twisted serial killer. While getting inside the killers head, they realize that they are still in each others hearts. I liked the concept and enjoyed the story. I wish it had been longer. Sometimes I found the story to be confusing, I wish I had more background on the characters and understood their psychic abilities more. It took some getting used to.

All in all "Hot In Handcuffs" is a novel that will leave you saying 'Hawt Damn!' and may have you purchasing your own set of cuffs. If you are looking for a pool side 'smokin' hot' read, you can add this novel to your list!

On The Island by Tracey Garvis Graves

There is no type of vacation I love more, than the kind where I jet off to a tropical destination!
Never mind I hate actually getting ON the plane. The typical vacation anticipation, my lack of patience, mixed with my fear of flying doesn't make me a good traveling companion. (At least that's what my husband tells me)
When our flight actually touches down at our destination, it's all I can do not to kiss the tarmac and shout 'Thank the merciful heavens I've made it!!'
I don't (because that would be weird) but the thought really does cross my mind every time we land. 

All that aside, once I'm at the resort, I am cool, calm, collected and looking to get my vacation on!

Vacation On!!!

There is nothing more relaxing to me than laying in a lounger, on a white sandy beach, listening to the surf mixed with island music playing by the beach-side bar. The smell of coconut sunscreen in the air. Sipping on an icy Blue Hawaiian while my nose is shoved in a book. Not a care in the world! (other then the fear of turning the reddish hue of a lobster)  DIVINE!

Doesn't it all sound so good? Well quit mentally making vacation plans! That can wait! You need to read the rest of my blog, so you can pick a great book to take with you on that trip!

Let's Play Pretend for a moment!

 Imagine now, that you are on that tropical island. The beauty and serenity of a lush tropical island......BUT you are without basic and modern convenience's such as food, shelter, sunscreen (books, cellphones, people, you get the drift) Oh and did I mention how you arrived? Yeah, think of the worst possible scenario. That's right, the plane crashed. (eeeeeek!!) That is what the characters in my next recommended read had to deal with and I can't say I envy them!

Macao Beach Dominican Republic

I've set my "Mommy Porn" off to the side at the moment (shocker I know!!) as I feel compelled to tell you about "On The Island" by Tracey Garvis Graves. For a debut novel, I have to say 'Holy Crap! She Delivered!' TGG shot straight to the top of my 'authors to read again' list!
'On The Island' is as spectacular as it is moving, making it a total MUST read!! It was released last year and is a best selling novel to boot!! Just HOW I missed this gem, I do not know! (Mystery solved, it's only in ebook form, print to be released this July!!) The good news is I have found it, read it, and now I am sharing it with you! (and unlike some of my recent reads, THIS one I can and will recommend to my mother!)

Out of the way Tom Hanks and Wilson, I much prefer Anna and T.J's castaway story!

30 year old Anna is hired to tutor teenaged cancer survivor T.J during the summer. The amazing part, it’s in the Maldives! She can escape from her life to figure out what she wants, all the while being paid to teach in a vacation setting! BONUS!
T.J's family already at their destination, the two end up making the long trip together.

On the last leg of the journey, tragedy strikes, and Anna and T.J find themselves lone survivors of a plane crash, stranded on a desert isle together in the Indian Ocean. (juuuuusssssst sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip…)
It soon becomes apparent that no one will rescue them. Faced with dangers like sharks, dehydration, starvation (etc...etc....) they set about to create a life for themselves as best they can. All the while hoping someone will find them.
Ana's life at the time of the crash was stale. Her biological clock ticking, she'd been stuck in a dead-end relationship and is now trapped on an island with a handsome teenaged male companion (Awkward!) Anna struggles with the reality she will most likely grow old on the island and never have children.
T.J. grows and matures before her eyes. He's very sweet, strong and dependable. Since he's a cancer survivor there is always that worry that on the island he has no access to medical help should it return.  He's so young, he's barely had the chance to live and experience things. There is no denying T.J is attracted to Anna, and as the years pass, she finds herself looking at him different too. He's no longer that wide eyed boy that she was first hired to tutor. He's a man and he does his best to make her see that!
The story is cleverly told from both characters point of view. A special bond is formed as they learn to survive in more ways than one!
I have to say the way the author builds and writes the story tremendous. Not being able to put it down, I was constantly on the edge of my seat wanting to know how long will they be stranded? If they are rescued, what will life be like when they get home? Will they become lovers? Will they eat their pet chicken?

While I have this book loaded on my Kobo, I plan on going out and purchasing a copy to sit on my shelf. It belongs alongside the likes of 'The Time Travelers Wife' and 'Eat Pray Love'. That is how wonderful a read 'On The Island' is!! Next up for Tracey Garvis Graves is a book called Covet, due out this Fall! I can't wait to read it!

I keep reading and blogging about “Mommy Porn” books to the point I’m tempted to rename my blog "Hawt Damn!” ~ perhaps add some Barry White music to the page for effect. 

If there is one thing that is becoming more and more apparent to me (and everyone else paying attention) it’s that Erotica is in! Fifty Shades has left woman panting, drooling and begging for more. A lot of ladies are wondering where to turn for their next naughty novel. Well quit scratching your heads, tell your friends, turn HERE to my blog. I’m almost too eager ('lil ol' me?) to do this research for you and I promise there are more books and blogs to come! (Making my list, checkin' it twice gonna find out who's naughty, annnnnnnd naughtier!)

Next up on my ‘Hawt Damn’ list, right on the heels of my last "Mommy Porn" recommendation (see previous blog) comes a novel due to be released on June 19^th!

That novel is a debut novel by Amber Lin, an up and coming author I insist you check out! It's a darker, more heartbreaking tale.

Here's the gist:

 Allie is a broken young woman who’s had a rough life. She has a sexy secret (Without beating around the bush- she’s a once a month slut) who's latest one night stand is not like the others.Usually in it for the 'wham bam- thank ya ma'am', the connection she has with this new man throws her. Colin makes her feel things she doesn't want to feel. He is her White Knight (or is he...?) Sexy secrets aside, she struggles to support her young daughter with the help of her best friend Shelly. Being in a relationship, trusting a man isn't what she wants to do. She tries to shake it off and move on without him. When her rapist shows back up in her life, her world is turned upside down. She's backed into a corner, and needs to figure out her 'shit' out and fast! (pardon my language)
Maybe taking a leap of faith with Colin isn't such a bad idea after all....

The book is told from Allie’s perspective. Amber’s writing is fluid and it captures the many emotions (desperation, shame, guilt, anxiety) of Allie’s character amazingly well. Allie is gritty, determined and lost. Her love as a mother adds a softer side to the plot. All she wants is to keep her child safe and loved.While I didn't agree with everything she does, or how she goes about things, I was cheering her on.
 I find Colin from start to finish remains a bit of a mystery. He seems to have a good heart and good intentions, but sometimes his behavior leaves you questioning his motives. Is he honorable? Is he her savior? Or is he like all the rest, and up to no good? (You have to read to find out)
Shelly's character both amused and saddened me. A prostitute who turns tricks to make ends meet for both her and her friend. Her strength, loyalty and love for Allie and child knows no bounds. This isn't your flowery, happy-go-lucky fairytale, not at all.

The sex is raw. The story is heart wrenching. The characters captivating.

This morning I woke up with plans to purge and clean the house. I managed to get my oldest off to school with minimal resistance while dealing with a toddler and her teething tantrums. It wasn’t the greatest start to the day and wore me out a bit. (I am already not a morning person)
 I decided to make myself some green tea and surf the net while my little one played before I got started on the day’s chores.

In my twitter feed, I saw a tweet that was promoting a Sylvia Day novel. Comparable to Fifty Shades it said, my interest was certainly piqued.

I immediately downloaded the book with the intent to read it this afternoon after my chores were complete.

My daughter’s tantrums and fussy mood continued throughout the morning and she crashed early for a much needed nap. At that point I said ‘To hell with chores’ and picked up my Kobo.

(I know what you are thinking...skip the boring back story and get to the goods....)

“Bared to You” (<---- Remember this title!)  the first in the Crossfire series, is about Eva Tramell, a young woman who moves to New York to start a new job accompanied by her 'BFF' Cary Taylor. Fast forward to a ‘meet cute’ with a handsome stranger that sends Eva reeling. Next thing you know, she is trying to avoid the overly sexual, intense and outrageously bold Gideon Cross. Not an easy task when it is discovered they work in the same building and he's just as attracted to her, as she is to him. Needless to say, things become interesting (You'll want your Wine, Chocolate, Batteries, B.O.B) when Gideon refuses to take no for an answer.

What I love about this novel are the characters. Eva is strong, witty, experienced and far from perfect. Her jealousy issues, temper and demons come out to play which makes for a fascinating heroine!

Gideon in my opinion is more likable that Christian Grey. He is stronger, more mature and far sexier. He most certainly has his own set of demons and flaws that he battles to overcome. I find Gideon less annoying than Christian (who IMO was a bit of a whiny baby) as while he does have a jealous streak, he handles himself better.
The supporting characters and their stories are just as interesting, which adds more 'oomph' to the novel.
Cary is the fun loving bi-sexual male sidekick who adds a great mix to the storyline with his over protective brother persona! He has his own side story and relationships that develop over the course of the book.
 Eva's Mom and Step-dad are both over-protective and add an extra layer to the tale. I found myself getting annoyed on Eva's behalf when reading their antics.
There is a lot of mystery surrounding Gideon's family (parents, brother sister) and it leaves you wanting more. (I can't give too much away... that is why you need to take my word for it and read the book!)

Both Eva and Gideon have dark and complicated pasts which begs the question, will their relationship work?
 In "Bared to You" we learn a lot about Eva’s demons, but by the end we still don’t have the full story on Gideon, just tidbits and assumptions. I guess we will have to wait for the release of **Reflected In You** later this year!! Yes, we have to wait until October for more!! (I DEMAND a faster release date!! An advanced copy?? Oh wouldn't that be amazing! Dare to Dream!)

 How does it compare to Fifty Shades? The formula for a good 'fantasy sex' book are there: A filthy rich hero, dark secrets, kinky sex, fast moving relationships, ex lovers, possible bad guy and even talk of Doms and Subs. Please don't think that you will be reading 'the same' book with all those similarities. I can assure you it's the same formula, but a much different erotically captivating story!
 If you are a diehard Fifty Shades, don't get your nose out of joint and consider this novel competition and refuse to read it. It's the newest series in a genre that is exploding and woman are demanding more. E.L James has paved the way!

Sylvia Day is Best Selling author, and you really do need to pick up a copy and see why!!

Sh*t I Tell You To Read!

Did you watch the hilarious TV show  'Bleep My Dad Says' staring the one, the only William Shatner? I hope you did, because it was another fantastic show that was cut from our lives far too soon. Whether you miss it, or 'missed' it... Never Fear! Just buy the books!

Justin Halpern hit the proverbial gold mine one day when he took to Twitter with quotes from his extremely blunt, rude, arrogant albeit 'wise' father. His dad's 'cut the crap-get to the point-don't be a dumb-ass' attitude is beyond entertaining.The tweets became so popular it turned into a TV show and two books 'Sh*t My Dad Says' followed by 'I Suck At Girls'.

Let’s face it, at some point or another, we have all read something in a book that is so hysterical we feel the need to go back and re-read it to someone, anyone who will listen. If you deny ever doing this, you’re a liar. (Shame on you!)

‘Sh*t My Dad Says’ and ‘I Suck At Girls’ are two books that should come with a guarantee that you WILL harass some poor unsuspecting friend or relative with quotes.

Case and point:

 My husband was watching TV one evening after a long day at work. I was curled up on the couch with my Kobo, hysterically laughing and becoming a general pain in the ass for those who wanted to hear the TV.

I kid you not, 'I Suck At Girls' had me laughing so hard I had tears streaming down my face. His story about his 'luck' (or lack there of) with the ladies, was priceless. I kept jumping up ‘John, JOHN, you have to hear this!!’trying to force him to listen to me and ignore his show.

He (of course) ignored me and waved me off (spoil sport) than turned the volume up on the television. (Don't worry sir, I shall remember this when you are seeking out my 'attentions' later) 

 My oldest daughter was jumping up and down 'Read it to me, Read it to me!' She was very curious about why I was laughing. Given the nature of the subject matter, I told her unfortunately it was ‘adult only’ but if I came across something she could hear, than I would let her know. (sorry kiddo, maybe when you're older)
Eventually, I was FINALLY able to read one hilarious situation from the book, just to have John just blink and ask  'What the hell are you reading?' before going back to his show.

All that aside, I had ‘I Suck At Girls’ read in matter of hours. The next day, I downloaded ‘Sh*t My Dad Says’, because I just needed to read more. (Yes, I read them in reverse, so what!?)

Again, I couldn’t stop laughing while I quickly finished the book every minute I had. The 'words of wisdom' and life stories Justin Halpern presents are wildly entertaining. There's a story from his life in 'I Suck At Girls' about a picture he drew for a girl as a child, that still has me laughing.

My husband said to me a few days after I completed reading them:

"Are you finished reading your porn?"

 My jaw dropped!

"What porn!!?? I finished Fifty Shades a while ago"

“You know, that porn you read to me the other night. Remember? You couldn't stop laughing about it on the couch”

Yes Justin Halpern, if you ever read this (and I know you wont) my husband thought your book ‘I Suck At Girls’ was porn!! Title suggestion for next book: 'Fifty Shades of Halpern'

My husbands birthday is coming up in a few weeks. Since he isn't a big reader, I'm tempted to at least give him the audio book copy so he can listen on his morning commute. I WILL get him to hear Mr. Halpern's words of wisdom even if I have to tie him to the chair and read every page out loud.

That said, you don't need to be an avid reader to enjoy these books. You just need a great sense of humor!

At Least You Can't Cancel A Book!

Summer is fast approaching, which means our favorite TV show's have been in 'finale' mode. The wait is on for next Fall to play catch up with our favorite stories and characters, if they were lucky enough not to make the chopping block.
This is a book blog, so how is television relevant here?

Let’s go back in time shall we, to a simpler time…..(for me anyway!) the early 90’s to be exact. I believe I was about 12 years old. A friend of mine and avid reader, showed me the book series she was reading by L.J. Smith she thought I might like.  I took one look at the cover and knew immediately that I was going to be hooked on The Secret Circle.
Yes, I did it!! I went against everything I was taught and judged a book by its cover! ;) I borrowed from the library and went and bought the copy I could never seem to get my hands on.

Previously it was a trilogy, later published as two separate novels. “The Secret Circle-The Initiation and The Captive” and “ The Secret Circle -The Captive Part2 and The Power”
 More recently (this past spring to be exact!) 'The Secret Circle-The Divide' was released! YAY! The story continues, (written now by Aubrey Clark ) and the ending suggests yet another book! (I have been frantically searching the 'inter-ma-net' looking for clues as to when it's released so I can pounce!)
 **Update as of June 1st** The next novel 'The Hunt' is rumored to hit shelves on Sept. 11/12!!

The Secret Circle (the novel) is about a teenager named Cassie, who moves with her mother to New Salem to live with her grandmother. She starts at the local high school to discover that because of her address, people give her a wide berth. There are some kids that stand out to her and as it turns out, they all live on her street as well. Feeling lonely, awkward and out of place, she befriends Diana (the leader of ‘The Club’) and slowly learns that she is a witch, from a long line of witches. She joins the club, due to a tragic 'opening' in the Circle, but some of the members aren’t happy about it, mainly Faye and her crew.

It turns out Cassie has amazing powers, so powerful for someone new, it startles and impresses.

The books follow Cassie as she tries to hide her feelings and connection with Adam.(Diana’s boyfriend) 

She learns how to use her magic, deal with the ‘not so nice’ people, witch hunters, and ultimately her evil father who has come back from the dead to rule the Circle. Oh and did I mention how she has to find and learn to use the "The Master Tools".... Lot's going on!

I love a good ‘witch’ novel, so you can imagine I wore my copies of this out, and now they are loaded into my trusty Kobo!

I had said for YEARS that this series should be made into a movie. You can imagine I was absolutely thrilled, excited, ecstatic, elated when I discovered that CW had picked up The Secret Circle as a television series!!!

That automatically became my ‘DO NOT DISTURB’ television show.  

I am typically not one to get involved in a TV show to the point I ‘HAVE’ to watch it. After all, I prefer a good book to television anyway. This show on the other hand was an automatic favorite and I hadn’t even seen it yet.

I was mildly irritated when you learn early on that they really stray from the original story that the author wrote.  It’s always true, the original novels are always far superior to anything Hollywood comes up with. You have character name changes, characters removed (Circle of 12 becomes 6), different twists and turns, even the setting was changed slightly (New Salem became Chance Harbor). At the end of the day, I unable to tell you which one I actually enjoyed more, the book or the show. (Pssst, for the record they are both totally awesome)

A week or so ago, a day after the amazing season finale, the announcement was made. The show had been canned after its first season! UNREAL!!! It was Jericho (previously my Do Not Disturb show) all over again!! Twitter was in an uproar, as was I! You know I am all about a TV show when I sign petitions to save it.

Sadly, it could not be saved, the series is over.  As dead as the evil John Blackwell (aka John Blake, aka Black John) Rumors are swirling that it 'may' be picked up by another network due to the cult following, but I refuse to get my hopes up!

Some people are trying to tell me that I should hop on L.J Smith's more successful  TV series “Vampire Diaries”  I’ll pass. I find Vampires over done. It's time for them to move aside and let Witches have a go!

I recommend this series if you are looking for something for the young adult in your house, Or simply, if you are just young at heart and love a good "witchy" read.

The moral of this story, well I have a few:

A “book” can never be canceled.

It’s truly amazing when you can watch a favorite story come to life no matter what.

The CW network sucks.

The American Heiress

For Mothers Day, I ask for nothing more than extra hugs and kisses. I am already spoiled as mom to the best little girls a mother could ask for. My children and my husband surprised me however, with beautiful gifts. I received a lovely framed picture (see photo below) my 8 year old made for me at school, a ‘mommy medal’, flowers, and gorgeous antique jewellery. We spent the day shopping,went on a long walk and ordered Chinese food.

I love my family and I am so blessed and lucky to be able to say they are mine.

Speaking of Mother's Day. I know it is coming to a close, but I have the perfect gift suggestion for Mom’s who love to read. I spent much of my weekend, relaxing on the couch reading "The American Heiress". A book I came across while searching the Kobo website for the next novel to jump out at me.

Written by Daisy Goodwin, this is a stunning tale set in the late 19th century, is one I highly recommend. I didn’t know what to expect during the first chapter. I actually had second guessed my purchase within the first few pages, luckily the story took off. It captured my attention, hook, line and sinker.

In this novel we meet Cora Cash. A young, immensely wealthy American Heiress, with an ostentatious, strong-willed mother who takes her to England to find her a titled husband. An riding accident brings her into the path of the Duke of Wareham, a very eligible bachelor. Cora's life quickly changes and she finds herself married and is no longer is under her mother’s suffocating wing.


Cora has to find her own way in her new role as wife and Duchess now that she is free from her overbearing mother. She's very headstrong, but has her weaknesses. She is oblivious to all that is going on around her, and doesn't have anyone to really guide or advise her.

Ivo, The Duke is not your typical romantic hero. He's vague and mysterious, which is a pleasant change from other romantic novels. As a reader you continuously ask yourself if he's good, or bad. I won't tell you.... that's for you to find out!

The story is incredibly written from several points of view.The characters are immensely flawed. One minute you find yourself liking someone, the next, yeah…not so much. There were times I wish I could jump into the novel yell at a few key players (You know you are absorbed in a book when....)
It’s tasteful, elegant, and something I can recommend to my mother. (Apparently she wasn't amused with my Fifty Shades of Grey suggestion......)

I would love it if this book ended up with a sequel. The ending alone leaves you wanting more. So much so, I actually went back and re-read the last few chapters again.


The perfect way to give this book would be in a gift basket, with a bottle of wine, and a box of chocolates.

Harlan Coben - Because Lucy Says So!

I am back from my Family Vacation, have suffered through a virus, caught up on housework and gardening!  FINALLY  I have time to sit down and fill you in on my latest book fascination!

First off, I want to thank those of you for reading, the positive feedback, comments and the book suggestions. From the bottom of my heart, I truly appreciate it!

Today I find myself blogging about the most recent book I have read.  So recent in fact, I started it yesterday afternoon, and finished it by midnight. Dishes can always wait until morning and my children were kind enough to go to bed on schedule! My husband always rolls his eyes when I get sucked into a new book. He's still complaining about my Fifty Shades read-a-thon! (Silly man needs to read it too! Two words... Inspiring and Flogger!) I digress.....

The book that I couldn't put down: "Stay Close" by Harlan Coben.

A mystery/thriller that revolves around an old murder that has come back to haunt the main characters later on in life. It follows a suburban mom with a dark past, a photographer (paparazzi) for hire, and a detective. The book is written in several points of view, and I was pleasantly surprised that when I thought I knew what would happen next, the author didn’t quite follow the stereotypical plot twist. Hallelujah! I always hear the angels singing when that happens! It made the book a page turner as I was constantly suspicious and thrown off track. 

I have it on good authority that in fact all his novels are like that!

One thing that really stood out to me about this novel, was how he portrayed the mom, Megan. I don't want to ruin the story line as to why, but he really captured a stay at home mom's psyche very well. Especially one torn between past and present "polar opposite" lifestyles. If I had one question to ask him, it would be: Mr. Coben, did you research or discuss Megan's emotions and thoughts with a female, or were her thoughts based on your ideas of how a woman in her position would feel . I personally thought he hit the nail on the head. I am curious if anyone else agrees.

I won’t lie, I did figure out ‘whodunnit’ early on, and even why. However, I’ll attribute that to my super sleuth skills and not the author's story. There were a few times I questioned my decision and started to lean toward other possible guilty characters and motives. Thank you for keeping me on my toes Mr. Coben!

My cousin Lucy was the one who recommended this author to me. She is a huge Harlan Coben fan, so I felt it appropriate to have her contribute to this blog! This is what she had to say!

“I’m not a big book worm – in fact rarely read- but I was bored on holiday a few years ago and my dad gave me one of his holiday books “PLAY DEAD” by Harlan Coben to read. I literally read it in a day and a half could not put it down! That’s when my addiction to his novels started. When I got home, I signed up to my local library read all the Coben books they had. I then purchased the others books which weren’t available in the library. One of his books I could not find anywhere. One day, I was at the airport with my wee sister. Our plane was 3 hours delayed so I thought I’d go and look in the book shop at the airport and I found the book!! I came back from shop totally “cheesered “– my wee sister on the other hand was less than impressed as knew how anti-social I became when I had a Harlan Coben book (yes I’m obsessed). Everyone I have recommended to has become as hooked as me…. always wanting to borrow more of my books!

 

Harlan Books for me are total page turners – I literally cannot put it down. There are so many twists, turns and red-herrings in them. Even when you think you have “solved” the crime right at the end there’s always a big reveal or twist which you never saw coming but always makes so much sense. His Myron Bolitar series also features his best friend Win and makes for comical reading as they are like a double act – but Win is someone you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of. There are other characters that make appearance throughout the books. I love it when one of my fave characters pop up! His books are just so clever, intelligent, fast paced and can be dark at times. As soon as I have finished one of his books I am so gutted that its over and know I have to wait another 6 months till his next book. Go read one of his books… you won’t regret it! Harlan Coben is so awesome he replied to my Tweet…. And then replied again with more information! One cool dude!"

Fifty Shades of 'Oh My' Part 2 ~ The Series Summary

  Anastasia is young woman, a student about to graduate and enter the real world. She meets Christian Grey, a successful 27 year old billionaire. They are very attracted to one another, but Christian has some dark and unusual secrets. 

Ana is a naive virgin who has her work cut out for her when Christian offers her a special 'contract' that outlines the type of relationship he is after. The novels follow the two as they try to make things work. Ana is introduced into his dark and extremely kinky S & M world. Christian needs to work on battling his demons and has to learn to change his ways so he can keep her.  It’s captivating, it’s surprising, and it’s incredibly sexual.

I had this trilogy downloaded and read in two and a half days. I ignored the dishes, forgot to make dinner, carried my kobo everywhere, and stayed up past midnights two days in a row to finish the series! I read it every spare moment I could find, between diapers, playtime, and all the rest.

What had me so captivated? I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it was not the 'cheesy dialogue smut fest' that I had envisioned. The storyline was an emotional roller coaster, and I was sucked into it. The books have several raw sexual scenes, that are incredibly important to the plot.  I’d be spoiling it if I explained why, so I will perhaps touch on that subject another time. I refuse to give away any spoilers, so here is the gist of it from my point of view.

The first novel ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ I found to be the most explicit.There were times while reading it I was getting angry on Ana’s behalf. I cried toward the end. Emotional to say the least.It was definitely the best book of the lot.

The second novel ‘Fifty Shades of Darker’ had a lot going on. It picked up right where the first book left off. Lots of ups, downs, surprises, and you see the characters grow and mature a bit more while dealing with some members of Christian's past.

The last novel is called ‘Fifty Shades of Freed’. While I liked it because it was the final chapter of their story, I didn’t enjoy the flashback aspect of it, and found it ‘hastily’ written. I wish there had actually been a fourth and final novel with a tidier ending. I tend to be picky about the last novel in any series.

I have read a lot of criticism about the series, from how it is ‘poorly written’, to ‘boring sexual scenes’, to 'non-relatable characters’. I found those remarks quite interesting, after all it all depends where your particular tastes lie.  I have also read rave reviews, singing the praises of E.L. James and the incredible tale she has woven. There is a reason this series is being talked about, and why battle lines are being drawn.The question is, which side are you on?

Here is my official take:

If you prefer books fresh off Oprah’s List, don’t buy it, don’t read it. This series isn’t going to win a Pulitzer Prize unless there is a 'Porn Category' that I am unaware of. If your tastes run towards the likes of 'The Time Travelers Wife', 'Eat Pray Love', and 'The Help', but you aren’t into mainstream romantic fiction, this trilogy  is probably not for you. If you are uncomfortable with intense sexuality, than you may want to look elsewhere for your next read.

 

HOWEVER,

If you just love to read or are looking for a romantic series, and enjoy getting lost in an interesting story, than this ‘off the beaten path’ trilogy is for you. It’s essentially 'Twilight' for Adults (minus vampires and werewolves) and if you do your research, than you won’t be surprised to learn how it originated. A fact I learned only after I made the comparison on my own. 

Those of you who have skimmed past all that and are foaming at the mouth wanting to know what the ‘Erotic’ hype is about. Well here you go. There is a reason this book has been dubbed ‘Mommy Porn’. It has some 'Passionate Pages', some 'Steamy Scenes' lots of 'Orgasmic Originality'.  The scenes are highly descriptive and explicit. If you shock easily, than some of the scenarios may have your eyes bugging out of your head.  There were times I was reading eyes open wide saying ‘Oh HELL no!’, and other times I was popping chocolate in my mouth, sipping wine saying ‘Ooooh my,my, my... you go girl!’..and perhaps I was even taking notes ready to call my friendly Passions Party Consultants on where to find some of the 'toys' (yeah, uh-huh it's called a flogger...?) ;) But that's neither here nor there. Oh calm down mother!

It’s as tastefully written as can be, and if you would like to disagree with me, I have a ‘novel’ I can recommend to you for comparison on that note, and you can tell me which is worse (or better?)
The sex being a very essential part of the storyline, Fifty Shades would be hum-drum if the author hadn’t taken it to the extreme.  Most romantic authors end up writing the same scenes, scenarios and dialogue in all their books. I congratulate E.L. James for going above and beyond and having the imagination to do so.

I have actually read complaints that the sexual scenes ‘weren’t that interesting’. If that is so, than I want to know what the complainers ‘playrooms’ actually hold! I am sure a lot of these comments are actually coming from people who perhaps read more erotic material and their expectations were higher. To the average romance novel reader, you are getting more ‘bang’ for your buck (Pun Intended)

One of the most enjoyable parts of the novels for me personally had little to do with sex. There are several emails between Ana and Christian throughout the series, and I found them hilarious and amusing. Whether they were arguing or flirting. The playful banter was quite witty and entertaining. It was a nice touch!

 The movie rights have allegedly been purchased by Universal. I’ll be interested to see how they interpret everything on the big screen and who they will cast in the roles. I've heard mention of Dakota Fanning as Anastasia, I don't see it......

The bottom line is, this trilogy is what it is. I don’t think anyone should really go in with any expectations other than it is an interesting read. Mine were poor going in and now I am championing it! Nitpicking over all the details of an adult romance is silly. Read the book, enjoy the story and if you really want to, let it inspire you.

The Most Terrifying Book I Own!!

  I like to think I don’t scare easily.....well....unless (picture this) I’m in a dark basement,  watching a scary scene from the movie IT (Stephen King)  and my young sister runs down the stairs in a clown costume screaming my name. NOT COOL SHEENA!! I eventually peeled myself off the ceiling, changed my soiled 'delicates' to than find her and yell at her! Fifteen years later and I still haven’t got over it. I don't like clowns!!!But I digress….

I went through a Horror novel phase a few years ago and came across some seriously frightening books (by John Saul, Douglas Klegg, Scott Smith, Sarah Pinborough) Entertaining, good for a shiver, but I always maintained ‘It’s just a book’ and moved on with my life.

Enter ‘The Dwelling’ by Susie Moloney. The scariest book on my bookshelf!

Do you remember that episode of Friends, where Rachael finds Joey’s copy of the Shining in the freezer?
 “The Dwelling” to me is my ‘Freak-me-out-Freezer Novel’

Now, I haven’t read it in a long time, and I have only ever read it once. Why? Because I kid you not, it disturbed me so much that I had to hide it on my bookshelf behind other books. Out of sight, out of mind! I didn’t want to be reminded of what the pages contained. Talk about a heart-pounding fright-fest. We have moved several times, and for the longest time, I just left it in one of my many boxes of ‘books I can’t fit on my shelves’. Recently it has ended up back on my shelf, (behind other books of course) and the only reason I am reminded of that is because my toddler decided to rearrange the shelves the other day. Oh look, there it was. Staring up at me, mocking me….

I am curious… if I read it again will it scare me as much as it did before? I refuse to get rid of it, just in case I decide I want to find out. I can assure you though, that wont be any time soon. (Enter horrified shudder HERE)

I am sure some of you are thinking, "well than would you just tell us what the book is about"!!

In short, it is about a house that is constantly on the market.  It shares the story of the people who end up living in it, and you find out why the house is always changing hands rather quickly. Each person in each story seems haunted in a different manner. From what I am ‘willing’ to remember, the stories were well told, and seemed in a lot of ways ‘plausible’ if you believe in the paranormal. The way she writes is fluid and it hooks you. The book is a page turner and will make you chew your nails until they bleed. A good excuse to go for a manicure. It may also make you wet yourself, so a side note, you may want to stock up on Depends while reading.

To the rest, that are unsure what to think..I say to you: If you like your Stephen King, if you love your Anne Rice, or are just looking for a good ‘scare’, Than make room in your freezer and read ‘The Dwelling’ by Susie Moloney, at night, right before bed, with only a dim lamp on…..maybe clutching a teddy bear for moral support.....

Whitney My Love ~ Historical Romance

Okay, I want to hear your answer!!! How many of you out there have those books that literally have fallen apart because you have read them so much? Please let me know, I want to make sure I'm not the only one! ;)  A few of my favorites are falling apart at the seams. Out of my entire library, my copy of ‘Whitney My Love’ is probably the most read, and you can tell by looking at it! I do believe it is time for a new copy, or just give in and download to Kobo. What do you think?

Judith McNaught has to be one of my favorite romance authors! I was first introduced to her books as a teenager. My mom had picked one or two up for a trip, and since I ran out of all my books, she let me read hers. I was immediately hooked and have passed on the love of her novels to several friends. She writes both modern day romance and historical romance and spins amazing and descriptive tales.  I am a firm believer that ‘Whitney My Love’ would make a fantastic movie on the big screen.

My brief description on the novel:  Whitney is a young lady who is not your typical debutante. She’s a strong willed girl, who doesn’t seem to fit in with the rest of the proper young ladies her age. She was raised in the English countryside by her father, as her mother died when she was young.
 She has a more awkward nature, and a taste for things that in her day and age are considered shocking for a young lady of good breeding. She likes to climb trees, stands while riding on horseback, wears boy’s breeches, and plays with sling shots. Whitney would have fit in just fine had she been a woman in modern time. She is a character I find I can relate to. 

Needless to say, her father is not happy with her behavior and enough becomes enough. He sends her to live with relatives and her transformation begins.  While away, she finds herself becoming quite popular in Paris and captures the attention of the Duke of Claymore, a man with a notorious reputation....
