Searching For Perfect ~ Jennifer Probst

WARNING: This book suggestion may cause you to purchase pocket protectors and lab coats for that special man in your life.

I chose a good day to be sick.
(Not that I really had a choice in this matter)
So whoever shared this virus with me,
I thank you.
Very little sleep, a stuffy nose, fever and wicked sore throat aren't getting me down.
Nope, not at all.

After all, it's absolutely pouring rain outside...so really is there anything better to do today than be forced to curl up on a couch to rest and read?

No, no there is not.

If you read my last blog (and you really should) than you know I have stumbled upon another great series and author...... and today was the release day of the second novel in that series:
Searching For Perfect by Best Selling Author Jennifer Probst.

I will cut straight to the chase on why all you sexy lil minxes should find a copy of Searching For Perfect:

Hot NERD sex.
WOW.
I mean, WOW.
*blink* *blink*

(Okay, the story was pretty good too)

Heck, Book One was pretty sexy....but in my opinion it was a tad milder compared to the fireworks in Searching For Perfect.
I was surprised that a few of the chapters I read today didn't cause my Kobo to spontaneously combust!

Me Likey!!

I think I have a bit of a book crush on Nate so I am going to tell you about his character first!
Nathan Ellison Raymond Dunkle (Hahaha, "Dunkle").....is such a nerd, even his name says so.
He's socially awkward, unkempt and married to his job where he literally IS a rocket scientist (oh, wait..."Aerospace Engineer".....) and he needs help finding a wife....(among other things.....) and he ends up as Kennedy Ashe's pet project at Kinnections, a match making agency she co-owns with her two best friends.
It turns out our feisty nerdy lil Ned, turns into hawt and naughty Nate.....
and it's great....
while they get ready to set him up on dates....
Kennedy resists the urge to mate....
(Cheesy rhyme, I know, but I am not editing it out)

As I anticipated from the first novel, we really got to take a look at Kennedy's bigger issues....She's this seemingly perfect female, beautiful, intelligent, successful.....but she is an inner wreck. Who knew that meeting Nate would throw a wrench into the perfect little bubble she created? She certainly didn't.
While her character back story is different from mine, I found Kennedy's story and struggles with eating, inner demons and body image very easy to relate to. I think that is one of the reasons I really like this series, the author's focus on not just telling sexy stories, but she invents characters that relate to inner and spiritual growth, who are still struggling to overcome very real hidden obstacles many of us face....(with the added bonus of romance and hot sex..... ;) )
The way Nate asserts himself with the overconfident Kennedy and throws off her game......meee-frackin'-yeow! Sparks fly in this story, so much I'm almost tempted to take up golf and get my sexy engineer hubby to teach me.
(I said almost...)

Now that I have waited all this time to get a copy of Searching For Perfect and it's over, now I'm antsy about reading Arilyn's installment when it's ready....and Oh MY GOD what is going to happen with Genevieve's storyline????????!!!!!!!!
(Who is Genevieve you ask? Read the book)
I love the fact that this series crosses over with the Marriage Merger series so we continuously keep up with some of our favorite characters!

I am truly impatient. I don't want to wait for the next book to release....unless it releases tomorrow....that I could handle....

Here is the Searching For Perfect synopsis from Amazon.com:

"The up-and-coming matchmaking agency Kinnections is the hottest thing to hit Verily, New York—just like Kennedy Ashe, social director for the service she owns with her two best girlfriends. A coach, consultant, and cheerleader rolled into one super-sizzling package, Kennedy creates dream dates, encourages singles to shine, and never refuses a challenge—not even Nate Ellison Raymond Dunkle, rocket scientist, nerd extraordinaire, and Kennedy’s newest client.

Kennedy vows to work her magic and transform this hot mess in a lab coat with a disastrous relationship track record into the most wanted man on the Verily dating scene. If only she could turn the wand on herself…though she radiates confidence and sex appeal, Kennedy harbors deep-seated insecurities from a tormented past and lifelong struggle with weight issues. When she realizes she and Nate are cut from the same cloth and might be perfect together, can Kennedy learn to let her heart lead the way? Or will her fears sentence her to the sidelines as Nate finds love—with someone else?"

It's a Valentines Day Book Boyfriend Swap!

 Happy Valentines Day!!

Since it's the 'Most Romantic Day' of the year  also known as the 'Biggest, Cheesiest, Cash Grab' of the year.... (You choose which title you wanna to go with, personally I am PRO Valentines) I thought that it would be fun to be a bit silly and kick it up a notch by celebrating this fine day with our 'Book Boyfriends'
(Don't worry, it's not considered 'cheating' if he's make-believe...)

A book boyfriend can fall into whatever category you want:
A hero that you have a bit of a crush on.
A hero that you love to read about.
A hero that you wish was real.
A hero that you admire.

Some people (mainly our husbands, boyfriends etc...) can be annoyed by the term 'Book Boyfriend'.
Some people think us book nerds are a bit crazy getting so caught up in our books, let alone kinda crushing on a fictional character. (Non-readers are a crazy bunch, we don't need to listen to them!)
Others (like me) love cracking jokes about having one....(Innocent fun)
And than there are a small few that take it far to seriously (Yeah, I am talking to you people who actually fight over who-gets which imaginary dude....STOP THAT! It's almost as bad as teeny boppers fighting over which hunky celeb they'll end up marrying. The answer is none of them! Quit kissing your posters! #LifeLesson #ToughLove)
I digress.....

Since it's Valentines Day, instead of telling you what romantic, sexy books I recommend, I am going to let YOU tell everyone who your book boyfriend is!

Let's trade info on our favorite fictional men!

I'll go first.

Honestly, I can't pick one. I guess you could say I am a bit 'naughty' when it comes to choosing book boyfriends, I have several! (The good news is I am monogamous in real life and that's all that matters)  Asking me to choose which handsome man of fiction I'm crazy about is like asking me what my favorite book is. Impossible....can't happen.Too many to choose from and too many good ones out there!
That said, I will point out some of my favourites in no particular order:

From Sexy Novels Based in Modern Times.......

1) Bennett Ryan from Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren. ~If you've read this book you will know why...Seriously....WHO wouldn't want this guy? Not only is he smart, successful, loaded, and comes from a great family...but he's fiesty, fiery and has freshly fucked hair. Not to mention butting heads with him works as a turn on. Welllll alrighty than! Sounds like a perfect match to me! I could read books with him ALL day. (and I have...) I'm hoping eventually the authors continue on with the series and Lord only knows I can't wait for the movie!

2) Will Sumner from Beautiful Player by Christina Lauren ~ Yup, another character from authors Christina Lauren.... they know how to write them...(I could have added Max Stella from their book Beautiful Stranger to my list, but the whole photog-fetish thing isn't really my thing......) Though I hate running, I love how into fitness and health Will is and the whole former player, sexy smart guy thing.....Yum! He's also deep down a genuine good guy and his sense of humor cracks me up! His relationship with Hannah is adorable. Hmmmm, and as I write this...I realize I have yet to finish that particular blog review for you all......it's coming and this is a preview of how good the book is. :)

And because a lady sometimes wants a lil Historical Romance......and a Title.....

3) Sidheah James Lyon Douglas (aka Hawk) from Beyond the Highland Mist (Karen Marie Moning)
It's actually been awhile since I have read this book, but he always stands out to me when I think of a sexy main character..... and even the Faery Queen agrees....(Yes I said 'Faery Queen' ....I'm not drunk when I write this) You're just gonna have to read the book to find out why....but taking on the mischievous, magical and sexy Adam Black....Hawt. If I was the leading lady in this novel, choosing to stay back in time with him is a no brainer.

4) Clayton Westmoreland from Whitney My Love by Judith McNaught.
A Duke. A handsome English Duke who will do whatever it takes to get the girl he wants, even if she doesn't know him yet......SOLD! I could totally be a Duchess in the 1800's..... (Think they'll let me bring my hair dryer?) He has his ups and downs....a bit old fashioned (well, to us Modern Era Gal's anyway) but he is gallant, a bit romantic and what girl doesn't like to be chased?

So there you have four of my choices....so far......

Let's see who everyone else chose!

Megan: "Book boyfriend... Hmm.. well I'm going to have to go with Ethan from Hit List by Anita Blake. First because the fact he carries four strains of tiger shifter in him gives him incredibly cool hair and also because he's super sweet and a little broken. I have a thing for the sweet, broken tough guys. He's badass and has a body that makes even Anita sweat.. so I'd love to cuddle up with him and see if my inner tigeress could find a nice playmate. I just love Anita's books for their suspense, the characters and of course the steamy love scenes and relationships help as well."

Shilo: "My book bf is from The Infernal Devices series (By Cassandra Clare). I want what Tess had, the best of both worlds... Will Herondale AND James Carstairs. What can I say? Together, they're perfect."
(She also goes on to tell me)
"These guys are Parabatai. Which means they are battle soul mates. They live for each other. There is even a ceremony to connect them. They both fall for Tess and she falls for both of them. It's quite the little love triangle. I loved the whole Shadowhunter series."
(I am intrigued!)

Erin: "I think I would have to go with Edward Cullen....(Twilight)... has too many temper tantrums to have a long term thing with and Gideon is way too controlling (although I would submit to both of them!! LOL) But boyfriend/husband material?? Edward always treated her as an equal and protected her with everything he had as did his family, especially once she turned! There was complete trust and respect between them. The road to trust with the other two would be a LONG one!"

Brenna: "Rhett Butler....Gone With The Wind" (Margaret Mitchell)

Miranda: "James Fraser from the Outlander series" (Diana Gabaldon)

Erin: "Currently Clayton Danvers from Bitten" (by Kelley Armstrong)

Sarah: "Edward Rochester from Jane Eyre" (Charlotte Bronte)

And I am going to end with the following choice(s) because like me.....this lady can't just choose one!!

Amanda: "Peeta Mallark (Hunger Games) Gideon Cross (Crossfire Series ~Sylvia Day) Christian Grey (50 Shades ~ E.L. James)"

So there you have it folks...... why not take some time this Valentines Day to snuggle up and read with your 'Book Boyfriend' or become acquainted with a new one from our list.

Now, I have a vacation to plan for. My hubby surprised me today with tickets for a romantic vacation to Cuba! Wonder which of your book boyfriends I'm gonna take with me...... ;)

A big shout out and THANK YOU to everyone who shared!! Want to be more interactive? LIKE my page on Facebook and join in!

Happy Reading!

Before I Go To Sleep ~ S.J. Watson

Can you imagine waking up one day and not knowing a thing about the day before?
(Ha, okay, well perhaps we have been there- done that after a night of binge drinking in our idiot youth....but that's not what I mean....)

Imagine waking up next to a person you don't know or recognize (One night stands don't count....)
Imagine looking in the mirror assuming you are a youthful 20 year old, but the shocking reality is you are much older than what you remember.....(Okay, I'm guilty I do that every morning)
Imagine having to your life told to you over and over again on a daily basis, by a stranger who you learn is your husband.
Imagine learning that when you go to bed at night, your memory will be wiped clean and when you wake it will all start over again.

It reminds me of that Adam Sandler -Drew Barrymore comedy.....(50 First Dates).....but this novel is far from comedic.
It's tragic and frightening.

Released in 2011 "Before I Go To Sleep" by S.J Watson is an absolute MUST READ for people who like a dramatic thriller..... or anyone looking for an amazing novel to lose themselves in!!

Book Description:

Christine wakes up every morning in an unfamiliar bed with an unfamiliar man.
She looks in the mirror and sees an unfamiliar, middle-aged face. And every morning, the man she has woken up with must explain that he is Ben, he is her husband, she is forty-seven years old, and a terrible accident two decades earlier decimated her ability to form new memories.
But it’s the phone call from a Dr. Nash, a neurologist who claims to be working with Christine without her husband’s knowledge, that directs her to her journal, hidden in the back of her closet. For the past few weeks, Christine has been recording her daily activities -- tearful mornings with Ben, sessions with Dr. Nash, flashes of scenes from her former life -- and rereading past entries, relearning the facts of her life as retold by the husband she is completely dependent upon. As the entries build up, Christine asks many questions. What was life like before the accident? Why did she and Ben never have a child? What has happened to Christine’s best friend? And what exactly was the horrific accident that caused such a profound loss of memory?
Every day, Christine must begin again the reconstruction of her past. And the closer she gets to the truth, the more unbelievable it seems.

My Summery and Take:

There is a surefire reason this book is getting buzz and has a major motion picture coming out! This novel is beyond intense.
The plot had me completely hooked. Christine wakes up every day feeling young only to discover that is far from the case. She is shocked to discover she is much older than she remembers....and that strange man in her bed is her husband. It's his job on a daily basis has to fill her in and reintroduce her to what has become of her life.
She learns she is keeping a journal and with the help of a Dr. Nash.....a psychologist who contacted her in hopes of studying her usual case. The thing is, it's to be kept a secret from her husband (who has given up on her ever remembering). She and the doctor secretly work together as she struggles to remember and regain her memory. His methods seem to work as the more she documents, the more triggers she's shown.... the more flashbacks she has. As we read her entries, we discover bits and pieces and learn things that don't quite add up. The question is, why has nothing worked until now?
As the novel progresses, you really start wondering if you can trust anyone....including her journal entries. Can she even trust herself?? Is she documenting everything in her journal correctly? What kind of person was she before she lost her memory? What will happen if her husband was to discover the journal? Where are her friends and family from before the accident? What is real and what is her imagination???
This book gave me chills. I always like to put myself into the characters shoes and really digest a novel like this but not even I can even fathom what this character goes through. The paranoia, the distrust.....your life having been stolen from you and you can't recall anything or anyone. This is a novel that will haunt your thoughts long after you have read it. It's a truly frightening thought to know that people suffer from amnesia on a daily basis and my heart goes out to those who suffer from this condition.
It's been days since I completed the novel and I still can't shake the story. That's the mark of a great read!
A wonderfully written novel, it captures the desperation and struggle of Christine's character beautifully. I do believe I may have suffered from some anxiety reading it which would explain why I didn't want to put it down. I needed to know how it ended so I could relax! I highly recommend this one!

On a side note...It's very rare my husband shows any interest in books, let alone in one I am reading. I don't know if it was the cover of the novel or if I was making sounds while reading it.....but my husband started asking questions about what it was about. I summed it up for him, this turned into a discussion on related movies-books-situations (Odd....) and I was quite happy when he said "If that was a movie, I would see it!" (...because Heaven-forbid he actually picks a book up....)
One Google search later and it looks like we have a date!!! Before I Go To Sleep is releasing in theaters later on this year....starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong.
(Now, if only I could read a few passages to him from Fifty Shades of Grey....maybe... just maybe I can convince him to see that one with me as well? ;)  )

Ladies, Gentleman.... Add "Before I Go To Sleep" to your reading lists and be sure to see this one once it hits theaters!! Make a night of it! ;)

Happy Reading!

Omens ~ Kelley Armstrong

I do not know where to start with this blog!!!
Why is that you ask?
Well, it just so happens that I am writing about an author who's work I am a HUGE fan of!
(The proof is on my bookshelf, never mind my e-reader)

Kelley Armstrong ranks extremely high as one of my favorite authors!
That statement led me to wonder how I could actually choose 'who' could win the title of my 'All Time Favorite Author'. After giving it much thought.....and ditching the idea of them fighting to the death (we don't want that) I'm convinced there is only one way I could be forced to name a winner:
Picture it, I hold a meeting with them where I give them all a challenge....Throw out character names (Lead character will obviously a charming blonde named Irene....) a plot outline, tell them to than pick their own genre and than GO!! Whoever writes the best novel wins my top spot.....(Reasonable request...no?)

Not only is Kelley Armstrong a Canadian (Eh!) but she writes one of the most incredible paranormal series of all time.....Women of the Otherworld. (If you have not read or heard of this series, please remove yourself from thy rock, oh sheltered one.....)
It is no secret to anyone who knows me well, that I am completely in awe of that series. I LOVE IT.
I love it so much that I don't like lending her books to people. I would rather spend the money to buy you a copy to keep, than lose one of mine. I love the writing style, the characters, the plot lines, the Canadian content, the twists, turns.... the way she turns monsters like vampires and werewolves into believable, every day creatures.
This is an author to read and recommend and I am not the only one who thinks so! It's safe to say that in my social circles author Kelley Armstrong is a popular choice!

I was lucky enough that she came into my neighborhood for a book signing a couple of years ago, and I did attend! I'm not gonna lie....I totally geeked out. I mean, I stammered, smiled, could barely talk to her because to me, meeting my favorite author is a total rock star moment. I actually forgot to ask if I could get a proper picture with her. (Dumbass that I am) It was awfully embarrassing and completely out of character for me. (Ask my friends or family how often I am ever speechless or shy.....)
HOWEVER, having her sign a book for me was amaze-balls. (Can people over 30 use the term amaze-balls??)

Anyway....now that I have totally geeked out again via my blog, I shall continue......

Omens has been on my reading list since I first heard whispers about it. Since I have been trying to read a lot of books on my TBR list, I decided to hold off on this novel. Holy Moley this book did not disappoint, and if you want the truth I'm a bit upset with myself that I waited so long to get a copy.

The synopsis from Amazon.com:

Twenty-four-year-old Olivia Taylor Jones has the perfect life. The only daughter of a wealthy, prominent Chicago family, she has an Ivy League education, pursues volunteerism and philanthropy, and is engaged to a handsome young tech firm CEO with political ambitions.
But Olivia’s world is shattered when she learns that she’s adopted. Her real parents? Todd and Pamela Larsen, notorious serial killers serving a life sentence. When the news brings a maelstrom of unwanted publicity to her adopted family and fiancé, Olivia decides to find out the truth about the Larsens.
Olivia ends up in the small town of Cainsville, Illinois, an old and cloistered community that takes a particular interest in both Olivia and her efforts to uncover her birth parents’ past.
Aided by her mother’s former lawyer, Gabriel Walsh, Olivia focuses on the Larsens’ last crime, the one her birth mother swears will prove their innocence. But as she and Gabriel start investigating the case, Olivia finds herself drawing on abilities that have remained hidden since her childhood, gifts that make her both a valuable addition to Cainsville and deeply vulnerable to unknown enemies. Because there are darker secrets behind her new home, and powers lurking in the shadows that have their own plans for her.

My Take:

You could not pry this book (or my e-reader) out of my hands if you tried.

I love how the novel began. It has a heart pounding-creepy-tricky vibe to it that really helps set the story up....I thought it was a cleverly executed way to set the mood!
It's hard to really describe Olivia's character before she discovers her true identity as Eden Larsen. We really don't get to know too much about her 'before' she discovers the truth of her parentage, but we know she is intelligent, beautiful women and has the world laid out at her feet. She has a plan! Marriage, career, maybe kids one day....As the story continues you can see how losing her identity actually helps her grow as an individual. We discover that she is brave, willful and even stronger than anticipated. I have to say, I was a bit surprised at times when Olivia would have a thought or made a decision that seemed 'outside the box' for her personality. An example would be how she comes to treat both of her mothers, especially the one that raised her. (Those who have read the story will know what I am talking about) That plot line alone makes me wonder, Does Olivia's sixth sense have something to do with her behavior toward her adoptive mother~ making it 'more' than just the typical shock and anger one might have? Is there more to that particular storyline that meets the eye?? (undoubtedly, there is......)

The whole novel leaves you wanting more and questioning everything!

All that said, you don't need to read too far into the novel before you see how Olivia's life comes crashing down on her and it is like a run away roller-coaster ride. There are omens everywhere throughout the book and the more they show up, the more she realizes there is more to this than just weird rhymes popping into her head out the blue. She ends up in Cainsville, a mysterious town that even by the end of the first novel leaves you guessing and coming up with theories. There are so many eerie and strange layers to that creepy, sleepy town.... the people, the gargoyles, the ravens, even the cat.....Cainsville is a big ol' bag of worms that I am dying to know more about, never mind the actual mystery about the serial killings and who is really behind them.

One character to watch is Gabriel Walsh.....He's a smarmy lawyer who represented her birth mother once upon a trial, and at first I just did not know what to make of this guy. Even though he is rather unlikable, he really grows on you as the novel develops, but even toward the end of book one, he's remains a very strange mystery.....I look forward to seeing how his character is to develop along the way and I am hoping a romance develops between the two.....

This novel combines styles we have seen from Kelley Armstrong in the past. The incredible imagination and paranormal-fantasy of the Otherworld series mixed with the more mainstream, mystery-thriller seen in her Nadia Stafford series....She writes with a great wit and captures the sense of foreboding in a way that makes me want to draw comparisons to the likes of Stephen King, Anne Rice,VC Andrews.....
When describing her novels when recommending them to my friends, I typically give the same speech "She takes the unbelievable and makes it believable...You're going to want more of it!"
You can tell the author puts a lot of thought into how she creates her characters and plots. No stone is left unturned and we are left with incredible tales. Kelley Armstrong novels are ones you can read over and over again!
She gets more than 5 Stars from me!

A fun fact about Omens: At the start of the novel there is an authors note regarding little 'Easter Eggs' she has dropped throughout the novel. If you are wanting to get ahead of yourself with the mystery than you can follow these Easter Eggs and do your own search ahead of Olivia and the story.
I personally decided to pass at this game, I want to go a long for the ride as the novels unfold....but for any of you who like a good mystery.....well there is your bonus incentive on why you should add this book to your reading list!

As you can imagine, I am on pins and needles waiting for the next installment in the Cainsville Series to release. Look for Visions (Book #2) to release in August 2014. I am so excited about the next novel that I actually created a reminder on my phone.

**Bonus News** Tonight on Space in Canada (Or on January 13th on Syfy in the US) is the release of "Bitten" (Women of the Otherworld!) and we get to watch Elena and Clay in action!!! I can not wait!! Check your local listings!!!!

Visit the authors website for more information: http://www.kelleyarmstrong.com/

To sum up this review:

If you love Kelley Armstrong novels. Read Omens.
If you have never read her novels. Read Omens.
If you need a great thriller. Read Omens.
If you need a great paranormal. Read Omens.
If you don't like the way your hair looks today. Read Omens.
If your husband or wife asks you to complete a chore today. Read Omens.

Get it? Got it? GOOD!!

Happy Reading!!

Private Paradise ~ Jami Alden

Baby it's coooooold outside.

Don't get me wrong....I enjoy winter...I love the snow... Never mind hibernating...there is so much to do....snowshoe through the woods, go tobogganing, build snow sculptures (Mere snowmen are not enough!)....Hey, I even have fun shoveling!
Look! Proof I'm an Angel! Or Crazy. You decide.

Alas not everyone does appreciate the cold, wintery weather like I do...That said, I certainly know when to throw in the towel when the temps outside reach -40 below! (GO AWAY Polar Vortex!!!!)
All that said, while I like winter, if you have followed my blog for awhile you know that I love to jet off to the Caribbean sun for a week to relax. Unfortunately sometimes (like this year) that isn't an option.
(@#$%^&!!)

I am here in spirit!!

Whether you are escaping this frigid cold weather by vacationing to an island (TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!) or taking a time out in a hot bubble bath (DO NOT TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!)...... I recommend grabbing a copy of this sexy book to keep you company and help warm you up!

Book Description from Amazon.com:

After years of catering to the whims of the rich and famous at one of the Caribbean's most luxurious resorts, there isn't much that can rattle Carla DeLuca.
Until Sam O’Connell shows up.
Tall, dark, and sexy, Holley Cay's new security chief is no stranger. He's the irresistible bad boy who seduced her over a long, hot summer only to leave her heartbroken, humiliated, and determined to never again fall for a player like him. But though her heart still stings with the memory of his rejection, her body can't forget the all-consuming pleasure of his touch.

Sam never forgave himself for his too cruel rejection of Carla over a decade before. Young, reckless, and convinced it was only a matter of time Carla regretted hooking up with a trouble maker like him, Sam pushed Carla away before she could realize her mistake. But when Sam lands a job working for Carla in paradise, he seizes the chance to finally make things right.

When a hurricane strands them alone on the island, Carla is unable to resist the passion simmering between them. She doesn't fool herself that what they have will last past the storm. But little does she know, Sam will do whatever it takes to make her his – forever this time.

My Take:

I liked it! So much so that my standard complaints apply to this review. It wasn't long enough for me, could have used more detail, why did it have to end so soon?? I enjoyed the characters chemistry, however the novel at times felt rushed to me (Gah, I hate when that happens!) I found myself wanting 'more'....more story, a few more twists, turns, more details etc...just to keep these characters and novel going a bit longer.... That is not a negative thing at all. It just means I like "MOOOORE" (I totally just sang that word like the Madonna song on the Dick Tracy sound track...Google it...)

I think it is safe to say that my favorite type of love story involves two characters with a past connection.....I also give extra bonus points for the scenarios that involve some level of animosity... (I maintain there is something extra sexy about those scenarios....the fiery and passionate the better..just sayin'!)
Sam and Carla have this amazing chemistry and it's pretty obvious that after all the years, they are still hot for each other. This novel follows both their points of view, so we are treated to the good ol' His and Her version of what went down all that time ago. The full story eventually reveals itself through flashbacks. (....and I wanted to slap him for her)

I have already read this book twice and will do so again. I've added author Jami Alden to my 'authors to read' list. I really enjoyed her writing style and the sense of humor. It made for a fun, sexy read.

A link to Jami Alden's website for those curious about her work!  http://www.jamialden.com/

Contemporary Romance Lovers....or anyone interested in giving this novel a read. You are in luck! If you have a Kobo run to the site and grab yourself a copy while it's still being promoted for free.....and while you are there, pick up the rest of her novels too!
If you have a Kindle..don't feel left out.....Amazon.ca currently has it for free as well!

Dr. Reenie's Cure for the Cold Weather Blues:
A romantic-sexy book with a tropical setting.
Hot Coconut Scented Bubble Bath.
Glass of Wine...or if you really need to get away in your head, mix up a Mimosa or make a Pina Colada!

Keep Warm, Stay Safe
Happy Reading!!

Beyond Belief ~ Jenna Miscavige Hill

I consider myself fortunate.

I grew up in a loving home with both of my parents, my sister, multiple pets, vacations, friends....After 34 years my parents are still married and are in love (as much as the thought of them all kissy kissy makes me gag)
Not everyone is that lucky.
One thing that played a huge role in my upbringing was religion and spirituality. A Pastors daughter (yeah yeah, go ahead, crack the jokes) I grew up reading the Bible, attending Sunday School, church functions etc… It wasn’t until I was a bit older I realized that this wasn’t the case for everyone. At times I envied my friends who got to sleep in on Sundays. (Hell, even now I envy anyone who gets to sleep in....)
While I don’t necessarily attend church on a regular basis anymore, I still very much am firm in my beliefs and try to teach my children what I was taught.
That said, I do have a vast interest in other religions. I am fascinated by them. I have great respect for what other people believe. I would never try to sway you or argue with you that I am right and you are wrong.  (Unless you show up on my doorstep...) I love inquiring and learning about so many different faiths and traditions.
I'm not going to lie, I even ask questions about my own religion. Why? Because I think it's better to ASK the questions than assume that I (or anyone else) has all the answers. (I'll deal with that when it's my turn to go meet the Big Guy in the Sky) I try to remain very open minded and live life the way I feel is best.
 I have faith.

All that said, there IS an exception to the rule.....
(Here comes the possible hypocritical part to my post)

I can't help but be very skeptical, Scientology makes me raise my eyebrows due to how 'new' it is on top of the ‘secretive’ nature behind it. (Things that make you go...hmmmmmm)
Why are all these people (Celebrities included)  flocking to a 'religion' created by some author just last century? (L.Ron Hubbard is his name and the book that started it all is called "Dianetics" )
You must be familiar with it with all the drama surrounding Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes when it comes to the controversial church, or be able to name the popular celebrities who are involved. The media is constantly painting Scientology in a negative light.

Needless to say, I wanted to know what the appeal of this particular faith is.

Like, What's the deal with 'auditing' each other (aka. a tin can-like lie detector test)? What are these 'levels'? (That can allegedly kill you if you unlock them too soon, so they are apparently super secret) Why is it that as a Thetan have you not already unlocked the secret to this faith in a past life and not remember it in THIS life..? (So, do you have to redo all the levels in every life?)

With it being so mysterious and 'exclusive', I was absolutely ecstatic to see a book by a former Scientologist hit the shelves in an explosive "Tell All"!! The author is the niece of the current leader of Scientology to boot! Hey, if this chick is running out and writing a tell all about this 'hush hush' religion, well than you can bet your ass I am going to read it!

And what is the name of the book making waves recently??? If you haven't heard about, get comfortable.
Here is the book description from Amazon.com:

From its science fiction origins to its stranger-than-fiction reality, much is speculated but even more remains unknown about one of the world’s most controversial religions: Scientology. Now, for the first time, an insider with unprecedented access tells the story of her childhood as a member of the Church of Scientology and her harrowing escape.

In this memoir, Jenna Miscavige Hill-the niece of David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology-pulls back the curtain of this secretive organization. She tells the incredible story of a childhood too strange to be believed and exposes the inner workings of Scientology’s celebrity culture through her own knowledge as well as her husband’s experience as a former employee of the Scientology Celebrity Centre.

Aspects of the organization that have baffled and alienated the public are fully brought to light in this real-life work of suspense. Hill addresses questions that have been raised about Scientology in the past, such as claims of forced and child labor practices, exploitative fundraising, coerced abortions, and the dissolution of families. But, with her unparalleled insight into the inner world of Scientology’s highest order, what Hill reveals is much, much more-and bizarre beyond one’s wildest imagination.

My Take:

Without giving too many spoilers (because really you need to read it to believe it) Jenna Miscavige (Hill) was sent away  as a small child to live at The Ranch (a boarding school exclusive to Scientologists) Unlike me, she didn't get to grow up in home surrounded by loved ones. There were no bed time stories, no mom or grandma baking cookies every week, no elementary school or high school....she was lucky if she got to see her parents once a week.
At the age of seven Jenna had to sign 'a billion year contract' dedicating her life to the religion. Apparently children aren't considered children, because Thetans (their term for their spirits) live forever, taking one body and gaining the next in a form of reincarnation.
Jenna tells her readers how we (the regular ol' non-Scientologist folk) are referred to as 'WOG's' ~an abbreviation that stands for 'Well and Orderly Gentleman' (meh....I've been called worse) and the author claims that the Celebrities are actually kept 'in the dark' and away from the more shocking truths about what really goes on behind the scenes, such as child labor, families forced apart for 'the greater good'.. brainwashing, intimidation....

She goes on to share how she always found herself caught between questioning things and suddenly believing whole heartedly in Scientology.. back and forth....forth and back....like a game of emotional and spiritual tug of war.

The whole book reads like a nasty game of chess. An extreme sociology experiment.
A sad tale of a girl who was robbed of an all American childhood, the allegations brought forth in regards to Scientology are jaw dropping. I could go on and on about the insanity that unfolds throughout her story, but I have to say there is so much you just need to read for yourself.  (FYI any religion telling you to supply your social security or credit card information for their records, as well looking for details on your sex life...as this book alleges.. well... don't walk....RUN to the nearest exit.....can you say red flag much?) It paints a picture of isolation, abuse and greed.

Jenna discusses how she and her husband eventually escaped and left the church, in the footsteps of others and how these former members are trying to get their stories out there.
I admire Jenna for the tenacity, the bravery and the courage she has shown in speaking out and sharing her story with the world. After reading the book, the final chapters are incredibly moving.

I'd call the book an eyeopener if it wasn't more or less suspicions being confirmed. (My suspicions at least, you read it for yourself and than draw your own conclusions on the topic)

The writing and way the story is told makes it easy to grasp the concepts and dynamics of Scientology and should you find yourself confused, there is a Glossary in the back to assist you. The learning is woven into the story as she describes what is happening.

The Church Of Scientology naturally has denounced Beyond Belief.

If anything, this memoir has me asking MORE questions about Scientology than ever. Questions for both members and ex members of the faith. I am just naturally curious. I would LOVE to sit down and chat with Ms. Hill one day and hear more of her story. (She has now been added to my fantasy dinner party guest list, you're off it Tom Cruise!)

Fascinating, Heartbreaking and Shocking.... You have to read it!

Happy Reading.

I've got a S.E.C.R.E.T.....

Okay... I really don't have a secret.

At least I don't think I do......

(Let's see if I can remember one by than end of this post)
I'm pretty much an open book. (I've posted pictures of my fuzzy handcuffs on a previous blog, so the admission I don't have a secret shouldn't shock you)
I'm pretty bad with secrets in the sense I completely forget what anyone tells me. Do you know how awkward it is when a friend tells you something, than six months later they bring it up to discuss and you are like "WHAT??? Why didn't you tell me!!!!" and they reply "I DID tell you" and I'm like "Oh NO you didn't" ....so than they fill me in on the conversation and I am like "Oh yeah.....now I remember" (But half the time I really don't....There it is! MY secret!!)

My memory gets worse with age. (And lack of sleep)

However, I am pretty sure if a friend of mine told me she joined a 'Secret Sex Society'.... I'd remember that doozy!!! (All the while bugging for details....Some people need to live vicariously you know)

I finally picked up a copy of S.E.C.R.E.T by L.Marie Adeline on the weekend, read it in less than 24hours.
(One cool thing for us Canadian chicks......the author is from Canada eh?)

If you haven't heard what all the fuss is about, than let me fill you in.

S.E.C.R.E.T is about a woman named Cassie, in her thirties, widowed and living a dull life as an insecure waitress. She's watching life pass her by, thinking she is past her prime and has no hope for love or anything. She's all but given up on dating and her appearance. A large part of her insecurities stem from a husband who had verbally, emotionally and physically abused her. She feels worthless. She has not led a sexy life, very virginal and 'boring' by today's standards.
She starts noticing and envying a woman who frequents the cafe she works at. This woman accidentally leaves a notebook behind, a diary of sorts, which Cassie can't help but sneak a peek at.
Just a few explicitly detailed paragraphs are enough to make her blush.

Enter what is to become her dirty little S.E.C.R.E.T.
A society where you get to act out your sexual fantasies as a way of healing and self discovery. It's essentially a hands on approach to therapy.
No Judgements. No Limits. No Shame.
With the help of S.E.C.R.E.T Cassie learns to be empowered by her sexuality, gaining confidence over the year as she completes her steps and gains a charm for her special bracelet.

What did I think?

I'm not going to lie. I have heard so many people making such a big deal about this novel I was expecting something 'new' and spectacular that would blow my mind. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't meet my expectations at all. The hype was overrated. It wasn't as dirty or complicated a storyline as say Fifty Shades or the Crossfire series.

Now, I am NOT saying I didn't enjoy it. I actually DO think it was an entertaining read, a nice simple story to pass the time. (Truth be told I would probably classify this as more a beach or bubble bath read) If you like sexy 'Mommy Porn' books than by all means do pick up a copy. (Treat Yourself!)
For me, it was very 'skim the surface' and a bit predictable. I found it was tame compared to other books in the genre, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. Especially if the thought of sexy books scares you or makes you uncomfortable. I found myself constantly comparing S.E.C.R.E.T to the likes of Kathryn Harvey's 'Butterfly', but that particular novel had more twists, turns, storyline etc...
S.E.C.R.E.T to me was a 'safer' version. (Is it stereotypical that the Canadian author has the more 'polite' sexy novel?)

I have to admit the way it ends peeved me off a bit. It took me by surprise how abrupt it was and left me wanting more.... but in a different way than most books.
Let me explain:
Recently Blackbrooke by Emily Silver left me screaming "Nooooooo don't leave me hanging!!!" I can't wait to read the next installment of that series and am practically jumping up and down salivating for it.....
S.E.C.R.E.T on the other hand left me thinking "Gah, how dare you just slam the breaks on the story!!WTF!"... but I do have the patience to wait for any sequel in the works and wont rush out to get it....Eventually I will get around to it when the mood strikes. (Get my drift?)

I guess we are just going to have to wait and see how the next novel plays out..... if it is a continuation of Cassie's story or perhaps a new recruit into S.E.C.R.E.T with a whole new batch of fantasies played out.....

Happy Reading!

Selling Out by Amber Lin

                                           "OhMiGOD.....SUUUUUCH A GOOD BOOK!!!!!"

Now let me tell you, I don't give a rat's patootie if you don't typically like or read 'Erotica' because clearly you have never read anything by Amber Lin.Throw all your preconceived notions of the genre out the window and give her Lost Girls series a try. (Just do it!!)
I've previously reviewed and HIGHLY recommended her book 'Giving It Up' to all the Mommy Porn readers and generally anyone (over the age of 18) looking for a great read.
Let me tell you, the novels are incredible!!! This author is clever story teller who writes passionately, and I don't just mean about the kinky bits! Both novels are emotional, well developed, intricate and clever. When you read a book by Amber Lin, you aren't reading a 'fluffy-kissy kissy-romantic- happily ever after-sex-fest'.... you are reading a hardcore, down to earth, gritty story of intrigue, life lessons with a sexual element.

I feel like Amber Lin has tossed down the gauntlet to other authors and snapped:

"Here I am bitches!! Beat that!"

Love it!

Here is the blurb from Amazon.com:

Shelly Laurent escapes her life as a high-class escort, but against her better judgment she takes the scared young Ella with her. In retaliation, her pimp and his dirty cops frame them both for murder. On the run, Shelly turns to the one man who could be her salvation: Detective Luke Cameron. She doesn't know if she can trust him or if he's just a mirage, but she needs his help to free them all.

With a heart forged in fire and irreverence born of necessity, Shelly fights Ella's demons--and faces her own. She throws light on the shadows of Chicago's underworld, challenging everything she knew and the man she's come to love. Together, a prostitute and a cop fight for truth stronger than secrets, hope deeper than deception, and a bond more enduring than betrayal.

My Take:

As you read above....'Selling Out' is Shelly's story. A prostitute with a good heart, but a lousy career that she wants out of. She has an 'interesting' friendship with a cop named Luke. She lusts after him from afar but that's about that... (oooor is it?).... they have a complex 'relationship' to say the least.
This character while she is clever, caring and compassionate is also rough around the edges! Sassy and tough as nails. Shelly's scars run deep, but the way she goes out of her way for others is commendable. Whether it is saving young hookers like 'Ella' from following in her footsteps, or looking out for her best friend and the small child Shelly helped raise. She has a heart of gold, sacrificing herself to keep others from hurting.
Her story is emotional, gripping and sad.

We learn more about Luke's character in this novel. He is a cop with a keen interest in helping save Shelly and any prostitute he can. The two dance around their feelings for one another as they try to bust Henri, the big boss 'Pimp' who has a nasty hold over Shelly and Chicago's Underground.
He's a dangerous man, but that won't stop Shelley from trying to stop him once and for all, no matter what it takes.

If you have read the first novel in the series, than you will be happy to know that we see Allie, Colin and even Philip again!
The plot in this book is just as complicated and compelling as it was in the previous novel. With all the twists and turns you will not be able to put it down! So, when you read it, clear your schedule!!  Since it is a continuation of the story, I recommend reading Giving it Up before you continue with this novel. (I also recommend you check out my 'Giving It Up' blog)

This is a FIVE star novel in my opinion. So what are you waiting for? Check.It.Out!!

Happy Reading!

Just The Way You Are by Barbara Freethy

 Dear Barbara Freethy,

If you ever read this, I just want you to know......
You stole my Saturday! I would demand it back, but I really enjoyed the story you told! ;)

Sincerely,

Irene

I made a trip to the salon this weekend. I decided it was time for a change. My hair has been long, blonde and boring for a while now. I decided enough was enough. I booked myself in with my fabulous hairdresser (Are you reading this? I am testing you!! xoxo) excited to bring about a sassy change. (As I type this, I am now a brunette with a short choppy bob!)

While waiting for the color to take, I drank some tea, pulled out my iPhone to see what I had waiting for me on my Kindle App!

If I had known how addictive this book would be to me, I would have probably chose to read it on a day with less distractions!

'Just The Way You Are' is a novel that revolves around a complicated (and page turning) love triangle.

Allison Tucker winds up pregnant at 18 with her sisters boyfriend, they end up marrying....(yes you read that right) Naturally this would open a whole can of worms, and nine years later (when the story takes place) it's time to air all that dirty laundry. She's older now and no longer wants to waste her life with someone she thinks is with her because of a child.

Tessa MacGuire is a supermodel who besides losing her boyfriend at a young age, hates her sister for being an annoying man stealer. She refuses to ever step foot in Tucker's Landing again, but when her Grandmother has a stroke, she has no choice to go home, face her past and the two treacherous people in it.

Sam Tucker is caught between two sisters. He's a good guy who made a stupid drunken mistake. He puts responsibility before his heart, and now it is coming back to bite him in the ass. It's time for him to figure out what he wants out of life.

Jimmy Duggan... Oh Jimmy, the friendly photographer who has an assignment with Tessa. He shows up to offer his support and from behind the camera can figure out exactly what the three are thinking and need... I love this character! He's like cupid, but with a camera.

I really could relate a bit to some of the topics that come up in the story. (Not the whole sister-boyfriend- love triangle bit) I had a baby young and out of wedlock. I understand the emotions and fears that surround every decision made afterwards. I over analyzed everything. (just like Allison does in this book) Lucky for me, everything worked out amazing and I am very blessed. My daughters are and always will be THE best thing that has ever happened to me. I have my husband to thank for them! The only regret I have about that time period in my life is giving into the cheeseburger and cake cravings during my first pregnancy. (Seriously, would it have killed someone to tell me you don't really need to eat for two?)
That said, while the story in this book is not parallel with my life, it frightens me how much Alli resembles me at times. She freakishly acts, (overreacts) thinks and behaves like me. (Oh see, now you are going to buy the book to see what the heck I am talking about) Have you ever read a novel where you are like 'Holy crap, it's like the author was in my head, I could play that character in my sleep....' ...Well if they are EVER casting the role of Alli.... (Pick Me! Pick Me!)

My little story aside, I have to ask....

Who hasn't at some point in their lives sat back and thought 'What If...?'
Asking that question doesn't make you a bad person. It means you're human. You can't let it take over your life like the characters in this book do. (Ha! Easier said than done sometimes!) It's not healthy. Face your fears head on and learn from your mistakes.
Now, I am not here to really get into how complicated life can be, so let's knock the philosophical stuff off and get back to the review.....

I literally could not stop reading this book. I was terrified my iPhone battery would die and I would have to charge it before finding out what happened. Who does Sam choose? His Wife and mother of his child or his First Love?

That said, not only did I finish it.... but I decided to immediately read it again. (Hey! What can I say... I like the story!)

Just The Way You Are isn't the first novel by Barbara Freethy I have read and it certainly won't be the last! (I may have to add her to my growing list of favorite authors)
I like her style. The situations are human, even though it is a love story, at times the book feels very anti-romantic in some ways and I looooove that! I really enjoyed the 'life's little lessons' aspect to the book, as well as the plot and the characters. It's no wonder Barbara Freethy is a New York Times Best Selling Author!

If you need a beach, bubble bath, bedtime or rainy day romantic read. Pick up Just The Way You Are, or any one of her other books.

Happy Reading!

(for those of you who are like...oooooh sounds like a great book... but what about this hair change.....well these pics are for you.....) ;)

Speeding Tickets ~ Valley Brown

Hola!!!

Okay..... so my body is suffering through a cold Canadian winter, but if you can tell by my greeting..... my mind is actually on an island.....
No tropics for me this year (Go ahead, pity me.....)

I am really trying to get back to reading (and blogging more) it's been hard with so much going on (stay tuned, I am sure I will tell you more eventually) but the good news is, I have completed another book for review.

I took a little 'me' day today with the purpose of finishing a book I started earlier this week. I was successful! Hoorah!
My much earned prize for completing such a 'me' task is a glass of wine.... only after I clean up the dinner mess and do the dishes.....

So what book did I take the time out to read?

One that I have had in my position for quite awhile now. 'Speeding Tickets' by Valley Brown.

Book One of 'The Rocky Road' Series, Speeding Tickets is a story about a widow named Christine (aka Chris) who decides to take up motorcycles as a bit of a hobby. She meets a handsome biker named Doug and the attraction is intense....

Here is the book description from Amazon.com:

Speeding Tickets is a contemporary romantic suspense novel centered around recently widowed Christine Cassler, whose journey through trauma and tragedy is intermixed with the hope of finding love once more. She is hardly prepared for a tumultuous romance with a mysterious handsome biker, though, and when she uncovers a scheme of deceit and embezzlement at work, it threatens not only her second chance at happiness, but also her very life.

My Take:

Christine is just trying to figure out life after her husband. After three years, she is just trying to move on and accept the fact that she still has some bounce in her step. It's time she made some changes. (Who hasn't been there? My hair appointment is this Saturday) She lives alone with her cat, works as a secretary and hangs out with her sister-in-law.

Doug's character threw me off. I honestly had to keep reminding myself he wasn't under the age of 30. (Ageism at it's best) It's not until you start hearing more about his life, that you finally realize he is older and has lived. I don't want to say too much about him, it's best you read the novel and get to know him that way.

I'm not going to lie, as the story went on I fixated on the how very vulnerable and 'young' the characters were for their ages. Their love story was remarkably like that of a teenaged couple.
It made for an interesting read, a mix of innocence and naughty (Now now, this is no where near a kinky romance like 50 Shades, so no getting your panties in a knot)

The way the book was written, while it isn't a 'heavy' novel at all, it did keep me on my toes a bit. I think it was just the combination of the features.I honestly didn't know what to really expect next.
It ended up being a fun, light and casual read. I thought at times, 'oh okay, it's going to get a bit sexual' and than it wasn't. (damnit!!) Now I'm not saying that in a 'bad' way.... but I will go so far to say that if the book was human, it would be a tease! All sexy talk, little action. I do wish though it had pushed the romantic limits a biiiiiiiiit more.

The mysterious side story with Rob the creepy boss had a surprise outcome. I didn't really know what the chocolate gifting, money thief was really up to... and I felt that way right until the end. That said, I think the story line needed a bit more meat on it's bones. It had a good base, I liked how it kept me from actually knowing how the end would play out, but I do wish we had somehow met his wife.

My favorite part happened to be the twist in the novel. I saw it coming a mile away, but I was excited to find out I was right! **spoiler alert possible with next comment** One thing I love in a novel is when something comes full circle! (If you read the first chapter of book you will understand why that is a spoiler)

All in all, this 'play it safe' romance is one you can recommend to your mom, but read yourself as well.

I will be checking out the next book in the series. Let's see what happens to Chris and Doug next!

Happy Reading!

Underneath by Michael Cargill

I received an email begging and pleading with me to help a starving indie author.
Now, since I am sweet and kind (am too!!)  I offered to send him cookies, but alas they aren't sensible eats to send across the ocean.
A turkey dinner would spoil long before it arrives.....and Prince William is just ignoring all my calls now that he's married Kate...so he's no help....

What else could I do to help a starving indie author?

Cookies Anyone??

                                             Oh that's right!!

I CAN READ, REVIEW AND BLOG ABOUT HIS BOOK!!  ((duh!))

Michael Cargill this review is for you and your starving belly! ;)

I must start this entry off with some questions for my readers.....

Are you a frequent 'People Watcher'?

Have you ever wondered what the guy next to on the park bench is thinking?

Or what the story is with the woman pushing the stroller?

Have you ever witnessed a very public meltdown?

Or had that creepy 'heebie jeebie' vibe from someone sitting across from you on a bus?

Are you curious about the stories and secrets of perfect strangers?

If you answered YES to any one of the following questions, than you are going to want to read 'Underneath' by Michael Cargill.

A man clearly in need of a padded room and straight jacket, Hugh is living a mundane life as a freelance writer, occasional video game enthusiast and gym member. We follow him as he hangs out at the park (CREEPY) to grocery shopping (WOW) to starting a relationship with poor unsuspecting Abigail (RUN....NOW!!)
Hugh is most certainly a guy you would like to avoid at all costs. He appears 'normal' on the outside and yet deep down has tremendous psychological issues. (..and you thought your ex was a loon....meet Hugh!) While reading about his character, you will be intrigued, baffled and disturbed. You may also find yourself eyeballing those around you, trying to figure out what goes on in their minds! Warning: You may also develop an aversion to the term 'slug'.

I found 'Underneath' to be a page turner. One of the biggest reasons I couldn't put it down being that I wanted to see what this nut job would do or say next. I find it alarming to think that right now there are people walking around like Hugh. Dark, strange and in dire need of mental health intervention!
(Just turn on the six o'clock news program,.... crack open a paper....look over your shoulder.......they are everywhere)

The novel also follows two police officers who walk the beat and go about their business. When they aren't issuing incident forms, it seems they are hitting up a neighborhood coffee shop for a 'cuppa'.
Clare is an 'ass-kicking' female cop with lethal stare. She's married and silently struggles with the kids versus career debate.
Robert was a character who had me laughing. He's a fun-loving sarcastic cop, who just needs to move in with his girlfriend already.
Little do they know that the majority of recent disturbances they are dealing with, are the work of one crazed individual.

The story-lines and characters all interconnect, whether they are simply passing each other on the street or happen to play the same video game online. It was a nice touch the story.
You know that feeling, when you are watching TV and you end up yelling 'Don't go in there' at the screen? I felt this way reading 'Underneath'. Every time the cops casually encountered Hugh, I wanted to yell 'Arrest the Weirdo' (Which I am glad I didn't because surely someone may have carted me off for yelling at a book)
While this is a more serious read, the author uses a lot of witty sarcasm and humor throughout the novel, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. It didn't detract from the seriousness of the subject matter and just added that extra element to the characters. (Who doesn't bite their tongue and hold back on a good sarcastic tongue lashing?) There is nothing like good British humor and sarcasm to keep me entertained! (Russell Brand, Ricky Gervais....and now Michael Cargill to name a few!)

A strong message to take away from this novel? People aren't always what they seem. You never know what lay beneath the surface!

Watch the Book Trailer for Underneath! The music captures the creep factor of Hugh rather well!

Visit Michael Cargill's Blog !

All in all, 'Underneath' is a relatively short read and enjoyable thriller to pass the time with, and I think YOU should give it a read! In fact, the author has generously told me to pass the story on with 10 free e-book giveaway copies!

WHO WANTS ONE???

Butterfly ~ Kathryn Harvey

Once upon a time, before Anastasia met her 'Fifty Shades', before Eva 'Bared' it to Gideon, there was a Butterfly…..

A seductive, sensual and mesmerizing Butterfly……

A book about making hopes and dreams a reality.

A story, that tells the tale of women in search of having their wildest fantasies fulfilled.

A tale about the thirst for power and the desire for ultimate revenge.

You will be entranced. You will be enthralled. You shall be warned.....

This is NOT a love story!

I was so excited when my package finally arrived in the mail! I tore open the yellow envelope, made sure my toddler was amused with her toys and immediately sat down and started to read! (Thank God I had completed my chores for the day!)
Written under the pen name 'Kathryn Harvey' Butterfly is one of those novels where you have to clear your schedule well in advance to read. There is a lot going on within it's pages and it needs your full attention. (I will sign a note saying I have given you permission to ignore the housework if anyone complains... I've got your back!) I was torn the other night between watching 'Love In The Wild' and reading Butterfly. Not wanting to miss out on either, I compromised and read during commercial breaks. It took all my spare time, made me late for bed, forced my husband to complain about my sleep habits, but it was well worth it!

Trying to write a blog review on this novel is a difficult task. The reason? Because if I say too much I may spoil the mystery of the plot. I don't want to do that to the reader. So I will keep with the spirit of Butterfly and the characters by revealing only tidbits I feel can be shared.........

Let's start with the description from Amazon:

"An arousing, passionate story of three women's hidden desires and the place called Butterfly, where dreams are kept and where fantasies come to life.
Above an exclusive men's store on Rodeo Drive there is a private club called Butterfly, where women are free to act out their secret erotic fantasies. Only the most beautiful and powerful women in Beverly Hills are invited to join: Jessica, a lawyer who longs for the days when men were men, and women dressed to please them; Trudie, a builder who wants a man who will challenge her - all of her - with no holds barred; and Linda, a surgeon, who uses masks to unmask the desires she hides even from herself. But the most mysterious of them all is the woman who created Butterfly. She has changed her name, her accent, even her face to hide her true identity. And now she is about to reveal everything to realize the dream that has driven her since childhood - the secret obsession that will carry her beyond ecstasy, or destroy her and everyone around her."

 My take:

"Butterfly" flits back and forth between it's characters weaving a spell over the reader. It spans over several decades to tell the complex tale of the mysterious owner of Butterfly, and how the club came to be.
We follow several different characters, some of them over time, others in just their present day situations.
The subjects of sexism, racism, homosexuality, sex, ethics, politics and religion are themes that appear throughout the story. In my personal opinion, the author did a fantastic job capturing the attitudes and struggles society faced in the mid nineteen-hundred's. (I'm still waiting on Marty McFly to show up with the Delorian so I can go back and check things out for myself) The terminology and slang smoothly transitioned between the decades which set an authentic tone to the novel. 'Kathryn Harvey' captured the thoughts and challenges of the poorer classes in the fifties, especially those pertaining to women with no education and the harsh attitudes of men who believed women had a place and it was either the bed or the kitchen. We hear the thoughts of a poor ignorant white man, and how he feels about the African American help. We read about J.F.K assassinated in his prime and how it effected and changed not only people in the country but the course of characters lives in the book. We see the freedom and sexual liberation of woman in the sixties. (You get the picture) I could keep going all the way until the book takes you to the 'present day' of Butterfly which is the nineteen-eighties.
I especially enjoyed as the story progressed to describe the Hippie Movement in the late sixties. One line made me chuckle and I will share it as it is not in any way crucial to the plot: The following is in response to an inquiry of a secretaries whereabouts:

"I don't know. She just came in this morning, announced that she was no longer Debbie Schwartz but Daffodil, and that she was going to go out and find her karma"

(Oh the things that amuse me)

I found myself nostalgic as I read about the days when things were still kept in filing cabinets. When we used typewriters and people had to actually 'wait' for their phone calls. (And YES, I am old enough to have used both a typewriter and a rotary phone, but if anyone asks I am twenty five!)

I don't think I would even classify this novel as 'Mommy Porn'. There is a depth to this novel that puts it in a class of it's own. While Butterfly does have imaginative and erotically charged sexual encounters, there is a rock solid story line full of intensity and drama. We don't see 'as much' sex as we saw in the other novels I have reviewed and what we do see in Butterfly is written with class, not crass. (Newsflash for those who think this is a straight up tale about erotic sex. It's NOT!)  May I be so bold to say that if you didn't find Fifty Shades Of Grey to be your cup of tea, than Butterfly may be more suited to your tastes! (And if Fifty Shades was your style, it doesn't matter read this book anyway!)

Let's take a quick peek at the characters!

Dr. Linda Markus: A surgeon with two failed marriages, and some serious sexual issues. When she’s not trying to work herself to death, she is at Butterfly using it as her own personal ‘sex therapy' session. Will she ever be able to fix her problem? Or is she doomed to be alone forever.

Trudie Stein: Fun-loving, single and looking for love in all the wrong places. She’s the most sought after female builder in a business. A business that is dominated by men who see her as more of a pain in the ass than anything. She has a veracious sexual appetite and just needs to meet Mr. Right… Butterfly helps her get her jollies off in a safe and fun environment while she figures out what exactly she needs in a man.

Jessica Franklin: A young, successful and shrewd Entertainment Lawyer by day and a suppressed, emotionally abused, submissive wife by night (or whenever her douchebag husband is around) Her friend Trudie introduces to her the idea of Butterfly and wants her to join. Will it help her heal from her husband’s domineering ways? Will cheating solve her problems and give her the confidence she needs?

Rachel Dwyer: A lost, lonely and embarrassingly naive little girl who gets caught up in a world of prostitution. She's an avid reader for someone in her age and social class. She loves to get lost in a book and will do anything improve her life. For someone who didn't grow up with a lot of love, she has a lot to give.

Danny MacKay: A despicable low life, hell bent on being the most powerful man he can be. His ego and skill at cunning knows no bounds!

Beverly Highland: The best and only word to describe her is..... 'Enigma'

More Information

Kathryn Harvey is a pseudonym for best selling author Barbara Wood. This book was originally released in 1988 and has been re-released by Turner Publishing! Butterfly is the first in a trilogy, followed by 'Stars' and Private Entrance. I have added both to my reading list, along with every title Barbara Wood has ever written. She is an extremely talented author, and I look forward to discovering more of her work. (She has a LONG list of books I need to catch up on!)

In my personal opinion, Butterfly can be enjoyed by both women AND men. In fact, I challenge my male audience to read this as I would like to hear a man's take on it! (If you are a kick-ass guy and will read the book, send me an email and let me know your opinion so I can share with everyone!)

I will reiterate again that the book is one hell of a story and there is more to it than a 'fantastical' bordello and what goes on inside it's walls.

The many characters, story lines and flashbacks, twists and events taking place, that it makes a truly captivating read.

I can assure you this is not the last you will hear from me about this trilogy or author (pen name or not!)..........
